Roller Derby!

Hello All,
I am new to this site and thought I would share my experience with exercise. I have hated it for as long as I can remember, always finding something else to do (laundry, cleaning, reading, etc). I had a gym membership that I paid for every month and went a handful of times in a year. What a waste of money! Well, in October 2010 I saw a post on Facebook about a roller derby getting started in my small town. I talked with my husband and decided to make contact with the group. The next night I was on my way to a skating rink with 5 people I had never met. I have to say that was one of the best decisions I had ever made. Now, 2 years later I am in pretty good shape, not anywhere near my ideal weight, but I feel good about myself.
We have 2 hour practices 3 times a week, mostly endurance. The best part about it is that you don't feel like you're exercising. I mean, you know you are sweating and getting a great work out but it doesn't feel like a chore (like I always felt on the treadmill or elliptical). I always feel great after a practice! Don't get me wrong, there are nights when I dread going, especially nights where I know the coach (Professor Pain is her name) is going to do a primarily endurance practice. And roller derby is also great for getting out some aggression. Hitting people and its ok!!! And I feel fine wearing very little!
Roller derby accepts all shapes and sizes and ages! I can weigh what I do and stand next to the skinny 110 pound fireball and not feel bad about myself or feel like someone is staring at me (like I always felt at the gym). Anyhow, my whole point of this post is to let people know there is an alternative way of getting exercise! If you want more information let me know!

Ooooh! I have been an avid spectator of my local league for about 3 years. I adore derby and desperately wished I could grow the balls to get involved, but I’ve never skated, not even as a kid. Last week I went to a fresh meat info night with a couple of friends, for another league in my city who have a reputation for being more accommodating/less competitive than the league I’d been following. Two days after that I bought my fresh meat pack. I did some laps of my (carpeted) hallway, then yesterday my partner and I headed to a rec centre that has open skating sessions on a weekend. I eventually did 5 consecutive, albeit slow and unstable laps of the centre, without touching the walls! I felt like I could take on the world! Raw meat training doesn’t start until the end of October, with Fresh Meat a few weeks after that. I’m so excited to try this! Do you have any tips for a total newbie?0
