Hi
I have recently upped my exercise to roughly 2 hours a day (in total) and have been using the treadmill, to try and get back into running, cross-trainer and stationary bike.
This morning I woke up and my foot felt quite painful when I wiggled my toes and as I walked. It hurts on the outside of my foot around the little toe joint.
Is this more than likely a problem with the way I was running or wrong trainers?
It's wearing off as the day goes on so I'm not massively concerned about it, am just worried it will mess up my exercising.
Thanks in advance

It's likely just a pending overuse injury. Take the day off from running and reevaluate tomorrow. Biking should be ok if you want to keep working.0

This exact kind of pain has happened to me when I spent a lot of time walking or running. It definitely sucks. I have a relative that is a very valuable source of information in all things health related. (natural healing) The advice she gave me has worked for me several times when I had foot pain - the kind you're describing & also just when the bottoms of my feet ached from what felt like having no support or cushion on the bottoms of my feet, it felt like I was walking around barefoot on just my bones.
She informed me that 99% of foot pain basically has nothing to do with your feet at all. Your calf muscles tighten up - likely because of the amount of walking & running you're doing - and since those muscles are connected to the tendons & ligaments that extend through your feet, that is where you are feeling the pain. If you sit cross-legged & rub your calf muscle in a circular motion over your opposite knee, it will loosen up those muscles & your feet will feel better. Do this several times a day for 3 or 4 days, maybe longer & you will notice a difference.
As usual, I was skeptical when she told me this, so I only did one calf to see if I noticed a difference in one foot and not the other. I certainly did, in a few days I only had foot pain in one foot. So of course I started working on both calves & was soon pain free. I was so used to my feet hurting all the time, I couldn't believe how great it felt! Only problem is my husband doesn't give me as many foot rubs as he used to!!
The first time I tried this, I didn’t even realize my calves were tight, they weren’t sore & they didn’t feel tight. But when I started rubbing it on my knee, I felt huge knots in my muscles & I couldn’t believe how sore those spots were. I get foot pain regularly & after a few days of calf rubbing, it goes away until the next time my calves get a little tight.
My sister-in-law had serious foot pain for years & had been to a few doctors about it. They had tried a few things but nothing ever worked. One doctor actually wanted to do surgery even though they could never really give her a definitive answer to what was causing the pain. She started rubbing her calves over her knees & it went away. She was amazed.
I don’t know if this will work for you, but I’m hoping it does, certainly wouldn’t hurt to try. It actually feels great on your calves, like a deep massage. But be careful, the first time my husband tried it, he rolled his calf around on his knee too hard because it felt good & then his calf was sore. His feet felt better tho!!! Good luck.0 -
How many miles are on your shoes? And what is your selection process when purchasing said shoes?0

Thanks for those replies!
Really appreciate the help.
As for what is my shoe selection process.....not as good as it should be as money is tight so it is usually the cheapest running shoe I can find.
Will be saving up so I can get properly assessed for running shoes and get a decent pair....maybe I'll request from my other half for Christmas! I'm sure he'll be thrilled
Thanks again!0 -
This seems to be a shoe ('trainers'- that's so adorable!) problem. It could also be due to form and repeated use. The problem with treadmills and other machines is that it somewhat limits the scope of our movement and can cause repeat motion related injuries that would not have happened if you were running on a trail/road as your movement would have been more varied and less 'tight'.
The best thing to do is to find a Running specialty store. They will evaluate your gait and fit you properly for free. They usually don't charge more than another retailer for running shoes but they will only carry running shoe models that have proven themselves. This 'could' cost a bit more but in the end you save by not having the preventable injuries.
Also, please make sure you are having a proper warm up and cool down. This will also help prevent injury and also provide you more energy during your workout.0 -
It's most likely a problem from how much you are running than anything else. Take a few days off. Maybe use an elliptical or bike a few days intead of running or the treadmill each day. And reevaluate if 2 hours of daily exercise is what you really need to accomplish your goals.0
