Just a question...

I'm thinking of starting up weight lifting and strength training. But I have zero idea where to begin. Any suggestions?? (Also, if you have any advice for sticking to a routine once you start...that would be much appreciated as well. I have follow through issues.)

Thanks in advance!

    hi there,
totally hear you on the question. I am no expert but here are a couple of thoughts:

one way to begin is join a group class like for example Body Pump (les mills) which is a high rep, low weight full body strength training class.

Another way if you just want to start on your own is to invest in some dumbells and then incorporate some circuit training...here is a simple but good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvtbELHwSyE

You can also do alot of strength training without weights as well like for example this one that requires no weight, just bodyweight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF84c5lyfls

good luck...you can do this :)

I agree with the starting strength or strong lifts - both REALLY easy to start and builds you up great - and I agree YouTube for form and technique - stronglifts.com also has videos posted

I went to a gym class called body pump... I'm not *fond* of lifting weights and while this wasn't super heavy lifting, it was a great workout with weights... the class atmosphere kept me going back and it was awesome to be able to add more weights when I was stronger!

I completed this program and I loved it! There's a group here on MFP dedicated to this program. Great support!

I second the stronglifts.com reference... they even have a free Iphone app.

leangains.com is another good one, but not so much for strength training.

I have been doing the stronglifts 5x5 for the last 4 months and I cant believe the change

Just watch out for the super advertising on supplements I think the program does reccomend a stack if your not into supps you don't need it but following the nutrition for the program would be optimal.

Yeah I noticed that...I was just looking into it and there's like...a 5 minute video on why taking stacks is better. But I'm pretty smart about supplements and stuff. I've been a big advocate for supplements for a long time and I've done my fair share of research into them. So I'm not swayed by anything like that. I really like the way the program is set up, though. I think it'll work out nicely. Especially because it doesn't cost me money! It works out for poor people like me. :)
