hCG or Human chorionic gonadotrophin, is a glycoprotein hormone produced in pregnancy. According to wikipedia.org, this is what they have to say about it's application for weight loss:

"A controversial usage of hCG is as an adjunct to the British endocrinologist A.T.W. Simeons' ultra-low-calorie weight-loss diet.[7] Simeons, while studying pregnant women in India on a calorie-deficient diet, and “fat boys” with pituitary problems treated with low-dose hCG, discovered that both lost fat rather than lean (muscle) tissue. He reasoned that hCG must be programming the hypothalamus to do this in the former cases in order to protect the developing fetus by promoting mobilization and consumption of abnormal, excessive adipose deposits. Simeons, practicing at Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome, Italy, recommended low-dose daily hCG injections (125 mg) in combination with a customized ultra-low-calorie (500 cal/day, high-protein, low-carbohydrate/fat) diet loss of adipose tissue without loss of lean tissue. After Simeons’ death, the diet started to spread to specialized centers and via popularization by such as the author Kevin Trudeau, a specialist in promotion.

The controversy proceeds from warnings by the Journal of the American Medical Association[8] and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition[9] that hCG is neither safe,[8] nor effective as a weight-loss aid." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_chorionic_gonadotropin

There are many threads on this and for the most part everyone agrees its not a good idea. Do some googling, it has some nasty side effects.

What i am reading sounds very iffy.
  • I have a friend that uses it and he looks good, but it can cause some serious side effects. I'd do some research and talk to your doctor before buying anything. Good luck!!

  • I'd imagine you'd be hard pressed to find many fellow MFP'ers advocating either:
    a. Losing 27 lbs in 6 weeks
    or
    b. Being a proponent of HGH/steroid injections

Either way, please do some research... be it simply Google-or better yet, perhaps consult an actual Dr. about such drastic measures

    (P.S>Caps-lock...makes it hard to read/or seems as if you're "yelling"-just a suggestion...

The question to me is...what is your goal? Too lose weight rapidly at all costs? Or to treat your body gently, prevent disease, and live a long, healthy life?

Common sense says that 500 calories do none of these. Injecting hormones into one's body does not do this. It may have some doctors approving it...but it seems a last ditch effort for people with poor body image who want a quick fix. If you can live on a 500 cal diet...why not just get healthy instead? How often is hunger really the issue in overeating???

IMO, It is no different than all of the other abusive ways to lose weight. I mentioned it to dh (20 year military man, weight lifter) and he called it the "poor man's gastric bypass." Right up there with the "Mililtary Wives" diet my mom's friend went on in the 70's. Vodka for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
