Protein shake question.

I was talking to a buddy who lifts on a regular basis and I feel is fairly knowledgeable and he commented that I be having trouble losing weight because I drink a protein shake after my workout. He stated that if I dont do anything to burn it off the rest of the day it turns to fat.

Is this correct?

I am realistic and know if this is true, then is just a peice to the puzzle of why I am not losing weight.

    Unless you take in more calories than you burn, then no. That is nonsense.

    If the protein shake causes a surplus of calories, then sure.

    No he's wrong, it'll get used for muscle repair. All of the protein shake instructions I've see have advised taking it after exercising.
    However, something to read;

    Work out in a fasted state - Although advanced techniques to get to super low body fat percentages are beyond the scope of this article, here’s another tactic if you want to drop the last few percentage points: strength training in a fasted state first thing in the morning, and don’t consume your first meal of the day until at least 30 minutes to an hour AFTER your workout.  This is a technique taught to me by Vic Magary who has used it to drop incredible amounts of body fat in a short amount of time


    Perhaps open your food diary if you want other opinions.

    If you are eating more than you are burning, you won't lose weight. Another thing, out of all the macronutrients, PROTEIN is the least likely to turn into fat. So yeah, your friend is talking nonsense.

    Btw, by protein shake, I hope you mean Whey Protein ISO or something similar. Not one of those crappy shakes that are prepared for you. Those are loaded with unnecessary crap. If you need to supplement your protein, then use Whey.

    I should of. I can just imagine the amount of calories I would burn running for my life afterwards.

    I actually do lift on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for that very reason. Thanks for your input.
  • Just my opinion....No! In fact, I have to do a protein shake just to meet my protein need for the day. I spent a lot of time NOT losing weight because I wasn't taking in enough protein and my body was holding everything.....as soon as I added that protein I started losing. In addition, after a workout is the PERFECT time to add that. I guess I should add that the only thing I add to my shakes are berries, 1/3 of a banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter.....maybe if you go all crazy and make a meal it might have the opposite effect.

    I'm not a dude, but I lift heavy and drink a protein shake after every workout. I haven't gained any weight or fat, my muscles look and feel stronger.

    Could be muscle and fat redistributing itself. Less fat more muscles because the protein shakes are ment to help in the repair of muscles. I do not lift heavy or alot i do mostly cardio and still have a protein shake after aa work out or as a meal.

    After I workout I drink Whey Isolate to repair my muscles. Isolate is better than concentrate and cost a little more and it absorbs quicker into your system.

    Protein is meant to repair. PROTEIN, not SHAKES. Protein doesn't make you fat or skinny. It's calories. A combination of high simple carbs and some protein is much more effective after a workout. You need simple carbs to restore glycogen reserves.

    As long as you are on a calorie deficit, neither protein shakes nor heavy weight lifting will bulk you up. One suggestion is too look for a protein powder that contains both whey and casein so you can get the short term and long term benefits from protein for optimal repair.
