the pace is too darned slow

I'm sure this question has been asked to death, but how should I log my running when I am not able to produce a 12 minute mile (the slowest running pace in MFP database)?

I usually run on trails with lots of hills and my pace is 13:30 to 14:00 per minute (makes me feel like a tortoise!)
On the treadmill I can maintain 5-6mph depending on my energy level (with only a slight incline like 1%)

Do I just use the 5mph/12:00min mile since I'm still "running" or should I use something else for these trail runs?

Thanks all...

Well the database has 3, 4, and 5 minute mile walks. I'd pick whichever of those matches your pace.

I'd just log the 5mp. Hills are more work than a slight pace difference. I'm sure it balances out. I would also round down a little bit if you eat back your exercise calories just to make sure you're not eating too much.

You could also get a HRM and put in your own exercise manually "4.7mph hilly trail run, 30min.."

Great app for your phone (assuming you have one) that can help = Runtastic Pro (lots of others out there as well that others like)
  • You can make up the mph, do you have any apps that can track how far you have gone and what pace it was?
    I use imapmyrun

I run slow, too. On average a 12:30-13:15 minute pace. I just log it manually and use an app to track calories. Probably not accurate calorie burn wise but I'm currently more interested in logging my distance than my calories.

    Just a thought.

The difference in burn between a 12 minute mile and a 13.5-14 minute mile isn't terribly significant, so log the 5mph pace and you will be fine. 100 calories per mile (regardless of pace) is a pretty decent estimate.

I'm slower, too! I just log the 5mph & subtract 2-3 cals/min from the total burn that MFP calculates for me. :)

I calculate and put in my own numbers on the database. I calculate how many miles I walk in how many minutes. Lots of places online that will calculate that. You can "enter" your own exercise if it isn't in the database, just type in what you want to call it like joes 15 minute mile or something like that and when you hit "search" it won't come up unless Joe someone has entered that already so very unlikely. Then at the bottom it says "add new exercise" or something like that.

Let me know if you need more help, denise
PS here is a link to a calc. http://www.csgnetwork.com/directmph.html

Log it as walking. I did that as well (my first 5k distance I ran a healthy 14:16 pace). Seemed to work ok.

Create your own exercise called Running per calc.

If you know average incline, add 5% for fact you had to come back down.

    http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/WalkRunMETs.html

And select Net. MFP and HRM's would report Gross. But NET is how much you should eat back from your effort.
