The squishy bits... (Apron)

One of the bits I don't like about losing weight (I have lost and gained a few times) is when the exercise is kicking in and I feel squishy. It's hard to describe but it's like everything gets loose. Sounds odd but even on my calves where I've never felt I had fat, it's getting slack. I understand from google it's a good thing because it means the hard stubborn fat is breaking down. I like that my body is changing but this is the point where I feel like a body bag, my legs and arms are doing well but it's the middle that's the hardest and last to go.

I'm a runner/cyclist/swimmer so I feel I'm toning and I get my heart rate up and well fat burns where fat wants to burn so my middle squishy bits will go when they go. I'm now toning my core more which is helping and hopefully will stand me in good stead once the tummy is gone.

I'm writing this just to get others feed back if anyone else has this or got past this. I have to change what I wear to fit around this issue too which isn't easy. My hips and lower back are ok but it's my tummy that keeps me in bigger jeans and they're baggy on my legs. I'm wearing baggy tops around the mid because I just don't feel comfortable in anything tight. I really hate this bit. It's times like this where I've quit and put the weight back on because I'd rather be rounder and firmer. I'm not!! No way I'm giving this weight loss up. I'm only just getting out of a plateau so there's no going backwards, no way! But I really don't like this bit!!

I'm curious about the answers. I notice I am getting squishier around the middle too.

I don't think it's a bad thing but it does feel uncomfortable to me. It's not familiar. I know the further I go with this, the less there will be to be squishy but now it just feels odd.

I've never heard of this, sounds weird. Are you doing any weight training or just cardio? I know with an excess of cardio you actually can lose muscle instead of building it....

I wonder if the 30 day shred could help you. I am also a swimmer and I run sometimes. My tummy seems to have tightened up a bit in the last few days since I've been 'shredding). It might just be my imagination however! Have a look at the 30 day shred topics though for inspiration.
  • I have this bit around my tummy too! It's not nice but it's not nice to have a big fat tummy either! I've had 3 children and it's a bit like after you've given birth and the tummy area is left squishy(I think that's the best descriptive word for this area) hoping it will go in time. Keep up the exercise and healthy eating and when we reach goal weight we can look at problem areas. I think this is what us losers have to do from seeing posts on mfp.

Yes it's just like after I had my son, it's soft tummy instead of hard belly if that makes sense. I've been doing aqua aerobics for a while and although it's in water it's very intense! It feels like I'm toned underneath and the places I'm working more have the least fat but it's my tummy that's the problem. It's like carrying a bag of custard on your tummy. I know sounds gross but hey it's motivating me to run faster for longer so it goes quicker!!

I was looking for more info in this and google led me back to here and the post- TOPIC: Fat turning soft and weird feeling - what is up with it?

From what I've learned it's the different fats breaking down and most importantly it's a good thing. Not nice to experience but a good sign. Also explains why I've got more water coming out than I'm putting in. Also I've read to drink more water to help it along even more, will do!!

I am seeing this as well. Before I started losing weight I was fat but it was a firm fat, now it seems like the fat parts are getting smaller but also squishy. It is very gross. I do weight training 3-4 times a week and cardio 6 days a week and I know the muslces underneath are getting stronger and firmer but this fat layer on top is mushy now. Yuck, hopefully it is just a stage and goes away.

I just chalked it up to looser skin, but that kinda makes more sense. Bump for more info.

It happens to me....the squishy-ness comes and goes. Some weeks I'm tight and firm everywhere, so weeks I'm squishy almost everywhere. Usually after I'm squishy for a week or so, I lose some weight and it goes back to tight & firm. I chalk it up to the natural process of weight loss.

Strength training has helped though - I love Strong Lifts 5x5 :)(

Get yourself some Spanx or other "shape wear". I wear mine everyday. It keeps me in place so I can wear decently tighter clothing without spilling over or making odd bulges. Will help until it goes back to normal.

Depends on how much you lost also and how long you were overweight as for some people It probably will not ever go back and you will need medical intervention if that's a road you want to take ( I don't ). I am almost 40 so I have no need to have a 'barbie' body, I will be squishy and wear my Spanx ;)

Woken up and in complete shock!

First of all it has snowed here! Secondly, after being to the bathroom and having a waterfall I'm stood in the bathroom and it's worked! Everything tightened up! All the loose bits have really honestly tightened up, my entire shape has changed!! Cannot wait for the next big loss!

I'm not worried about loose skin anymore, my bodys taking care of it!!

Man. I hope to one day wake up with the shock of a toned body! So glad to have found this post as the state of my body has been really getting me down and I didn't know what was wrong with it. My belly is squishy but it's my thighs which are the worst and I've been trying everything! Just going to hang in there and hopefully have that eureka morning!

I'm so glad that I found this post! I just finished being annoyed at myself for this week for feeling pudgy and saggy, even though I have been working out every day even for the past week and a half. I look forward to when my fat starts melting off more to reveal my muscles! Slow and steady wins the race I suppose.
