I'm planning on going to my first TOPS(taking off pounds sensibly) meeting on Monday. Just wondering if anyone here attends these meetings in their town and what their thoughts are on it?

I'm a little nervous to go talk about what is a pretty intimate thing in front of strangers, but am looking forward to it as well. My boyfriend and friends are supportive of my weight loss but I don't want to talk their ear off about it, and while everyone has issues with their body/weight, they don't necessarily understand what it's like to be 300+ pounds.

    Hey,
I live in the UK and we don't have TOPS but I googled it and it looks good. Really aims at eating the RIGHT foods and portions rather than just adding up the calories in naughty stuff like chocolate.
I've tried other weightloss groups and found that talking in front of strangers and expressing how you're feeling was easier than talking to family and friends as you said they dont know what it's like to be overweight.
Since joining MFP, I have really come out of my shell in expressing how I'm feeling about my weightloss to people in my life.
I think you can use TOPS and MFP together to reach your goal if that's what you want to do. And, if you find TOPS doesn't work for you, you can always try something else. I will try and offer as much support as I can because, I know where you're coming from as I'm going through the same motions now.
I know you've tried MFP before and given up but think of them as trial runs and this time you're gonna stick with because you know what went wrong before.
Good luck and keep me posted on how it goes:smile:

    Thank you!

I think I'll like it because they're not selling a plan or product, it's really just for people to support each other in a safe place and to receive help being educated on healthy choices. Kind of like MFP but in real life. Haha.
  • Hi! I am a member of TOPS! It is a great concept, there are no diet plans to follow, points to count, and it is cheap. It is basically just a support group, you have your weekly weigh in and meeting. Every club seems to be a little different just depending on your leader. My club does competitions to keep us motivated. We share tips, recipes, etc.

If you get in to the right club, it is awesome. In my case, it isn't. I went in to a club that is really clicky. It is mainly elderly women who have been in the club for decades, and I feel don't take weight loss seriously. They seem to use it more as a social gathering. The age difference between us is hard, we just don't relate and they talk down to me as if my opinions or ideas don't matter. Lately I have just been going to weigh in to keep me on track because I don't own a scale. I have gone to Fall and Spring Rally's that are held every year and it is where other clubs come together and learn new things and share what each club is doing. I think I would have more fun joining another club in the area, the club I am in now just doesnt seem to be the right fit for me. I hope this post doesn't discourage you. I believe TOPS is a great thing to be a part of and I hope you are in a club that is supportive and motivating!
