I weigh more than I thought. I've GAINED weight...I thought I had but ARGH. ****. I go like...almost a year without weighing, and then this happens.

I've eaten SO well today, I still have like 500 calories I could eat but I don't know if I want to. I sort of just want to restrict like crazy and lose a bunch of weight quickly. I know it's not the best idea, but...****. I should not have bought a scale.

Just keep doing what you're doing. the weight will come off. the numbers will go down. do it the healthy way and it will stay off. if you start restricting or starving yourself you will lose weight faster yes, but it will also come right back
  • I honestly ignore my scale. Damn thing changes 3-4 pounds a day anyway. It's best to only use them as a guide, not as the honest truth. Your best method to see lost fat is measuring yourself with body tape. Overall the best method, or even weekly or bi-weekly pictures of yourself in the same clothes. Seeing is believing, and it's always been easily my best motivation

In another post you said you couldn't afford healthy food. I would have bought food before a scale, but that's just me.

It just sounds like you really haven't committed to getting yourself HEALTHY and FIT. Who cares what the scale says when your clothes fit how you want them to and you feel great? Yeah, its a good tool to track your progress, but it wouldn't be on the top of my list of things to buy if I were that tight on cash.

If you aren't going to eat all of your calories, you're going to get FAT, because your body will start breaking down everything else before it goes after your fat. Muscle weighs more than fat, and it also helps burn fat. Work on building muscle and your body will start working on burning fat. Get your heart rate up and your body will burn fat. Starving yourself will not burn fat. Eating crappy processed foods will not help you burn fat. Go to the store and actually take a look at what fresh fruits and veggies cost compared to anything else.

It all boils down to you. If you don't care about yourself or your health, you are never going to make a change. If you don't make a realistic change, you will never turn it into a lifestyle.

No, there is nothing wrong with a scale, only don't be controlled by it. Stop complaining about how you have messed up or gained weight and DO SOMETHING about it. Not eating those 500 calories left if you are still hungry will not help you lose it all tonight, so if you are hungry, don't punish yourself, eat something. Stay on course and full steam ahead!

    Oops double post.
  • You really need to stop whining. Sorry.

Either make the decision to get healthy, with the hundreds of suggestions people gave you, or conversely make the decision to go down the spiral you are on.

    It's tough love, girl.

So, if you eat at a deficit ( like a 10-20% cut from your TDEE) and you exercise, You will begin to drop bodyfat.
Of course, there is always the loss of muscle that can happen with dieting, but that can be minimized by weightlifting, in particular.

But this will not necessarily show up on the scale in a linear fashion from day to day/week to week.
    Didn't you know that?

And many things affect the number seen on the scale, such as fluid retention, and whether or not you've gone poo.

It just takes time, and your continued efforts.

Riiight, this is supposed to be a SUPPORT forum. I get it, people on this site are hungry and cranky. I've been eating right and walking, it's still disappointing to read the weight.

Anyway, people are just looking for an argument. SO PEACE.

I take comfort in the fact that, even if the OP was ungrateful for the time and mental energy I spent in sincerely offering my best support, others have benefited from it:)

Keep your chin up hun, you can do this, it'll take some time and you will hit obstacles, don't let yourself be one of them.

It's good you got the scale so you can tell when you are losing. I would also take measurements on a monthly basis. I wish I had done that from the very beginning, but I didn't start measuring until 6-8 weeks into my diet and I was already down 15+ pounds. The first time I measured was seriously depressing. much bigger numbers than I expected. But seeing them decrease every month is amazing . I can't wait till Halloween so I can measure again. I only lost 7 lbs in Sept but lost 19 inches from all over my body that month so obviously I was still getting results. You can get a tape measure anywhere like walmart or the dollar store and it's my new best friend. (if you weigh or measure only once a month its a more dramatic loss each time. Although I do admit I am addicted to checking the scale)

I ate all of my calories today, so I'm actually quite satisfied. I also had a pretty kickass workout, so far from cranky as well.

People get frustrated when they see someone making the exact same mistakes they used to. No one here wants to argue, they want to succeed, and they want others to, as well.

Congrats on your new scales! Go high in protein (fiber too if you can) .. it will help keep you full longer! You won't feel as hungry .. and not starving yourself either.

I can relate to how you feel. A few tips:

    1. You absolutely have permission/authority to own your own life and take care of yourself.
    2. Put the scale you weighed on away and only use it once a week. Put the food scale on your counter (or on a handy shelf, but somewhere you can see it and reach it easily) along with measuring cups. You need to use them at every meal and snack for at least 2 months.
    3. Take a picture of yourself in bathing suit or birthday suit (that one is dangerous. someone may find it). Start a written journal (not just the food and exercise journals on this site), and record your measurements: bust, waist, hips, upper arms, thighs. Do this once a month.
    4. Don't even think about losing the weight fast. Think about losing it forever.
    5. Find other ways to reward yourself that don't include food or drink.
    6. Be patient with yourself. Don't beat yourself up. (That's what other people are for.) You don't have to prove you are worth it. You just have to accept that you are.

Now you know, and information is power. I weigh myself every day because I need to track my progress one way or the other. If my weight is up, it motivates me to stay on track. If my weight is down it motivates me to stay on track. If my weight stays the same, it motivates me to work harder to beat the plateau.

Also be sure to take your measurements. As you continue to learn healthy new eating habits and to exercise more and more, you may not lose weight as quickly as you lose inches.
  • I feel that way too. SUPPORT not judgement. I got on the scale today and it said I had gained 6 lbs. What?I was very upset. Yes I made some poor decisions but I did work out and make some good choices too. We are supposed to be here for each other. Those who want to be holier than thou should just keep off the forum.

    Okay,
1st. If you weigh yourself on 3 different scales you'll get 3 different numbers. Maybe your new scale just reads higher than what you're used to.
2nd. When did you weight yourself? I always weight first thing in the morning after I use the bathroom.

Maybe it's not as bad as it looks.

You are free to choose to do what you wish, however you will pay the cost worth hunger, decreased metabolism, fatigue, and hunger. And no, not everyone is hungry is cranky. We are dedicated and working hard and expect the same from everyone else here. Excuses don't get results. Hiding from the scale doesn't get results. Trying to chase a quick fix doesn't get results. If u have gone a year without a scale, then it has taken a year of poor choices to get where u r, and u must expect to put in hard work and dedication to get results. Put that effort in and u will have support here. Support is only support, u must choose to make the effort. I am always posting the quote "I don't have time to workout, I make it". No it isn't easy. But it is worth it. Champion athletes don't win the Olympics by making excuses, or being angry, or wallowing in self pity, they win through dedication.and hardwork, and aches and pains, and clean eating. The choice is yours but so is the power. use your power to make change.

I think you're being overly sensitive, but I also think you're angry because people aren't telling you what you want to hear. I'm sorry you feel like you're being attacked and that people are being mean, but sometimes a person needs a little tough love.

I know how you feel right now. I'm plateauing at the moment and it sucks. But I'm not going to lay down and give up. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing.

Losing weight is hard. It didn't take overnight to gain the weight, so it's not going to come off overnight.

You haven't weight in a year and you're surprised at the result? Consider this your starting point and work your way forward. How does your ticker show a loss too or was that from the last time you weight a year ago?

Second, severe restrictions are more likely to cause you to fail than to succeed. Make small adjustments you can handle, eat better, exercise more, and be consistent.

Things aren't going to change over night, but they will change if you take the time to look at today as a beginning, not an end. Don't weigh every day. Limit yourself to once a week and adjust as necessary. Find what works and follow the course. You can do this, but it won't be easy or effortless.

  • Still use the scale but don't be controlled by it. For example, I weighed 153 and size 9/10 and know I weigh 158 and still the same size. You may have gained muscle and your weight. I know I have gained some muscle too.

well Technically you don't know if you gained weight...Its been a year, so why don't you go from this weight on and see if your going to lose or gain. ANd eat your calories...
