Weight gain after exercise

After burning 1,847 calories on a long bike ride yesterday I woke up this morning to find I gained 2lbs. My MFP daily calorie goal is 1,250 without the exercise and it showed a goal of 3,097 with the exercise. I ate 2,217 (carbs 358g, fat 82g, protein 112g) showing an 800 calorie deficit for the day so I was surprised to see a weight gain.. Any thoughts/advice on why? Is there a ratio that should be used to determine how many calories you should add to compensate for exercise?

Your muscles are retaining water, trying to repair those little tears :) Always happens to me when I weight train

Ditto. This is very common. I always show a weight gain after an intense workout. Stay off the scale a day or two and then check yourself:)

Water retention from strained muscles. FWIW, being under 800 calories one day won't translate into a weight loss the next day. Just doesn't work that quickly.
  • Also, muscle is denser than fat, so, over time, you can lose inches (in fat) but gain weight in muscle build-up (this is good!)

Happens to me all the time. There's no way you gained 2lbs of fat overnight. Only water, it will even out.

I'm a habitual daily weigher, but it doesn't bother me to see the numbers go up and down - I think it's fascinating to see the effects of a new workout, or four rest days, or not enough water, or whatever. Meanwhile, I see the inches coming off every time I measure myself, and my clothes keep getting more loose, so phooey on the scale.
