Loosing and toning

I have been doing Zumba for the past 2 months. I have lost 4 dress sizes (i am so Happy) but my arms and other parts of my body are getting saggy. I want to tone but I don't want to gain muscle over fat. I still have weight to loose. I need advice..:embarassed:

lift weights. i've also lost 4 sizes and i dont look saggy AT ALL. and i still have weight to lose.

weight lifting (strong lift 5*5) is my main workout.

trust me you're doing double the work

Ahh. So you arms are getting looser and you want to tone them? Only option is time and genetics.....unfortunately there is not much you can do with that. Give it time and the skin should tighten up some.

The muscle is mostly under the fat.

Lift weights :D You'll unlikely gain muscle while in a calorie deficit, but you will maintain more of it, making your arms more "toned" and less flabby.

    Just for future reference...

Lose: Be deprived of or cease to have or retain (something): "I've lost my appetite".

Loose: Not firmly or tightly fixed in place; detached or able to be detached: "a loose tooth".

    Just sayin.

You have to build muscle to lose fat; and toning is impossible if you don't build muscle. You won't look like a body-builder if you strength train. Your progress will plateau and you will become frustrated if you DON'T strength train.

Fat doesn't build over muscle...otherwise we'd all have six-pack abs. Get in and start lifting weights. Strength training is the way to go to build good muscles.

Except that they're not actually pronounced the same.

You should be doing both. Strength training is just as important for losing weight and boosting metabolism as it is for 'toning'

Per the following article from womens health magazine:

Strength's edge: Lifting weights gives you a metabolic spike for an hour after a workout because your body is trying hard to help your muscles recover. That means you'll fry an additional 25 percent of the calories you just scorched during your strength session, Westcott says. "So if you burned 200 calories lifting weights, it's really closer to 250 overall." And if you lift heavier weights or rest no more than 30 seconds between sets, you can annihilate even more.

Not sure if links work in forums:

    check out this site :
    http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-strength-training-program/

with strong lifts you start off fairly light to make sure you get the proper form down first before you start adding weight. and you add weight every workout until you can't anymore. on some of these exercises i'm lifting more than i weigh

i'm actually one of those women who gain muscle easily and i can tell you that it still takes a lot of effort of eating over my maintenance calories, eating a lot of protein (and i mean like a dozen eggs, 2 pounds of ground turkey a day) and working out with medium to medium-heavy weights for lots of reps and lots of sets and that would take 12 months. So the odds that you are suddenly going to look like she hulk after 1 month of weight lifting is really really low.

ETA: if you're afraid of getting bulky you won't. like i said i can gain muscle relatively easier than most other women and i've gotten so incrdibly bulky from my lifting that i've had to increase my pant size from a 22 to a size 12. i better watch out before i get bulky enough to have to go all the way up to a 6 :drinker:
