There are many different types of knee problems, so its hard to give advice on exercises without knowing what your problems are.

    - arthritis?
    - poor tracking kneecap?
    - meniscus tear?
    - knock kneed?
    - etc. etc.

Well, my knee issue developed when I started running 15 yrs ago. I gave up running for walking after a few years because it just didn't seem worth it to have knee pain while working out. I've just recently returned to running and the knee issue just isn't much of an issue anymore.
Knee trouble can be caused by any number of factors. You should probably talk to a physician. Or, keep the exercise low impact, like an elliptical.

See a doctor and/or physiotherapist. If your knee is dislocating then any other advice given here on the forums would border on irresponsible.

Lots of squats, not too deep though.
  • My knees dislocate as well. This appeared when I started running overweight a couple of years ago. So I try not to run much. I went to a physician and he told me not to do any excercise with my knees. I thought it was kind of ridiculous, so I went to another one and tried to find a solution. I do indoor bike (moderate effort) and found that you can work your quads without flexing your knees repetitively but laying on your back and with your legs straight lowering and elevating them. I dont get any knee pain by doing this. Go to a physician, but better go to one that specializes in sports. And cross check with other physicians.
