Winter Calories

I had an thought this morning ( shock horror ( so early))!

WINTER : As a natural thing, we as a species are designed to lay down fats for the winter ( biological ). The body has to work harder to keep are core temp at a constant.

Now for the "thought"... If the body has to work harder in winter, it would only make sense that the calorie intake must be higher. The calculators on all the weight sites do not take this into account at all!

Quick way to burn more calories is to wear a layer less clothes in the mornings ( with caution ) and to walk into the winds whilst strolling.

Anyway "thought" shared.... What do you think?

  • Hi Pete, sounds pretty sensible to me, fresh chilly walks, makes you walk harder. I'm on here most days, add me if you like. My girl and I at the gym a lot. Good luck mate!!

I spent quite a bit of time outside (farm/have animals) year round and find that I have an easier time getting to my daily calorie goal (I have a BodyMedia Fit) during the winter. On the average day during the winter, I spend 3 to 5 hours outside (mostly continuous) and live in northern Michigan (during coldest part of winter temps temps are probably in the tens to low twenties for a daily high). That said, I'm not sure if it's enough to require an adjustment to the calorie burn for the average person.

We don't get that extreme cold in Houston, TX - but - the cooler weather is a great relief from the long hot summers. If it is not rainy I get to take my lunch time walk outdoors rather than the tunnels underground, and yes, I tend to walk a lot more!

While intuition would suggest that you burn more calories in the cold the difference is negligible. If you were to stand around doing nothing and started shivering you would burn more calories than when just standing around in warm weather but once you start exercising your core temperature rises quick quickly and your body is quite efficient at maintaining it (that's one of the reasons you'll still perspire running in -35C weather)
