Welcome to MFP and good luck on your journey.
I joined in January 2012 and found this site to be an excellent way to log calories and exercise. Following the simple principle of eating less calories than you burn works and any tool that helps with this is welcome. The support of others helps as well.
Feel free to add me but I won't be offended if you don't.
