Advice on building endurance for my next goal, please.

I've come to the conclusion that the only way to get anywhere is to have a clearly defined and measurable goal. To acheive the goal you need to break it down in to stages. So now that I've acheived the goal weight I set when I started with MFP it's time to set a fitness goal. Here it is:
- Kayak the route on the map, camp on Urupukapuka Island for the night then kayak back home the next day. Complete it before the end of my holiday from work (6 weeks starting from christmas week).
This is a big paddle and before I can attempt it I need to build up a lot of upper body and core endurance. I will need to be able to paddle for 8 to 10 hours (with short breaks).
What kind of training (other than paddling) should I be doing to build up enough endurance to do this?
What kind of dietary should I be eating?
Any advice, tips, ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm not a paddler, but seems like a good total body program would work best. You need upper body and arm strength (obviously), but a strong core will be necessary to support your body throughout the trip. Your legs and hips will come into play, as well. Balance is also a key factor.
So, a mix of cardio, abs, strength training, and yoga!
It looks like a lovely trip!0 -
Sorry, I'm not a paddler either but it's an awesome goal.
One of my tri coach's favourite words is specificity - if you want to be a better run then you need to run, some I'm going to suggest lots of time in the water paddling (perhaps rowing on an erg when you can't get into the water?).
I also thought you might find this interesting, while you're not doing an ironman the amount of time involved is very simialr and I expect you would be facing the same fueling issues.
