    ummm...start running lol

seriously though...I used to run cross country many moons ago. If it were me, I would build up weekly or bi weekly your distance...but, I'm no expert...I'm sure there are many blogs on it though and probably a few in here that have ran their 1/2's and full marathons

There are many free training schedules availible on the internet. a year is PLENTY of time to train, most schedules are 10 week programs, but it is never too soon to start.

Get yourself fitted with a good pair of running and shoes, and just go out and do it. Do not run more than 2 days in a row, since you are a beginner. Run differently, one day run for speed, another run hills, another do intervals, another long, another easy. Mix it up. Dont't forget to cross train, it makes you faster and stronger.

Add in mileage, no more than 10% a week.

Start off slower than you think and just find your pace. You should find a pace that feels good to you, that you can carry on a conversation and feel like you can do it forever. Work off of that.

Most of all, have fun with it. There will be good days that you feel like a super star! and bad days where each mile is torture, that is normal.

Are you currently running at all now? If so, how much? Have you done any races - 5k, 10k?

There are plenty of hm training programs online. I think most of them are 12 week plans. Google Hal Higdon.
You have plenty of time to train. But, if you are not currently running you need to build a base first. You need to be running at least 3 days per week. Do some 5ks and 10ks. If you can't currently run that far, search online for training plans and build your way up.
