Jumping Rope

If you don't have a jump rope already I would suggest you get one, it's a good, fun, and cheap low impact cardio workout and you can do it anywhere, burning anywhere from 10-20 calories a minute depending on your weight and the speed you jump according to everything I've read. I like to do it in-between sets and exercises, so I'm doing cardio and strength training at the same time. I even just jump rope for 10-15 minutes straight for pure cardio, and when I do that I really feel like I'm getting a good workout for my calves and shoulders.
If you're looking for something to help your weight loss and cardio, start jumping rope.
Anyone else been jumping rope for a workout?

I sometimes use a jump rope to warm up before a gym session. Be sure to wear shoes though, I manage to whip my toes sometimes which is quite painful0
-
Haha yeah whipping your toes or legs is a little painful. But yeah it's a good warmup, gets your blood pumping for your workout0
-
I have a friend on mfp who does it for almost an hour at a time! i wish i could do that. im mot coordinated enough! lol0
-
No I am not that coordinated either, even manage to whip my forearm sometimes. But defiantly a good warm up :-)0

Oh wow an hour!? that's a long time haha, longest I did was 30 minutes, I did it while watching a tv show to keep my mind off of it haha, I gotta say tho that was the most calories I burned while watching tv lol0

Here are a few links that should have some good tips and pointers, and as for what to look for depends on what you like I guess, I have a thin light weight jump rope so I can spin it a bit faster to jump faster, they also have weighted jump ropes, it just depends on what you want. And a concrete patio is fine to jump on0 -
I started jumping rope a few weeks ago after watching a guy at my gym religiously do it during his workouts. He made it look very easy. It is anything but easy. However, while it is deceptively intense, it is an awesome workout! I Jump rope and then run stairs alternating for as long as I can. It is one of the best workouts I do, in my opinion.0

thanks...ill check those out... seems like a great way to start the day.0

It's amazing that something many of us did as kids as a playground game has become a really difficult skill we want to develop for our fitness development - me included!0

Carlos! Play your position, man! You were supposed to say "Have you tried yoga?" LOL j/k!0 -
Jumping rope was one of my favorite things to do when I was a kid. Couple of my videos have me jumping invisible rope as a warm up, but until I lose some more weight on top not so comfortable for a long term cardio.0

I'm pear shaped and carry most of my excess fat on my thighs...which means I'm still way too fat to jump rope without it hurting knees. I think I will start jumping rope when I am within 20 pounds of my goal weight.0

I used to jump rope between sets at the gym - made for a great (and very efficient - no lost time) workout. Just started working out regularly again this week; I plan to bring the jump-rope back next month.0
-
I just took my jump rope out of the wrapping and could only do 15 skips before I was beat. LOL By the end of the month I hope to be able to do 5 mins.0

I took a jump rope class at my gym back in July for about 5 sessions. Although it was pretty tough at first, the instructor promised that if we "practiced" that it would get easier quickly... he was right! In our classes we alternated jumping for two minutes, then stretching or doing a couple of upper body reps with handweights or pushups, etc. The instructor moved us through some foot movements like criss-crossing the feet with left in front, and then right in front, then alternating some back and forward step movements and some "high knee steps."
It was a great introduction, and I've added the jump rope to my workouts, usually once or twice a week -- usually alternating the rope for about 2 minutes while competely a circuit of upper body exercises. I find it keeps me nimble, balanced, and keeps my heart rate up during the 30-45 minutes.
I highly reccomend it as a "game" changer -- fun, and interesting to feel your body master something new. It's tough at first, but YES, with a little practice you'll be the envy of the gym. It looks cool, too.0 -
The only "jumping rope" I have done is in Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. In it you pretend to jump rope for 30 seconds, then switch to another cardio move, then again pretend jump rope for 30 seconds. When I first started 30DS I found it hard to even complete the 30 seconds. Now I am really good at it and am considering trying a real jump rope. Also, in the higher levels it's a double jump which is hard. I can do it but definitely not more than the 30 seconds.
I also recently saw Michelle Obama demostrating different jump rope moves on TV. She motivated me to start thinking about getting one too.0 -

Probably not the case. Skipping is very low Impact when done correctly. I started when I was over 270 and it was my only form of cardio.0 -
Jumping rope is an excellent workout. Doesnt matter what your size or fitness level. Professional boxers jump rope when training and I love the workout!!!

I love rope jumping! I jump daily and I'm not talking mary had a little lamb jumping, I'm talking Rocky Hearts on Fire type jumping. It is a true cardio workout. lost my first 20 lbs with rope jumping. I also encourage my friends to buy a rope. It is a full body work out. I have a rope at home, work, and in the trunk of my car. I swear by it. It is good to start out with a couple of minutes a day, then increase as you can. I can go 30-40 min with a one or two min slow down period. What I truly love is the amount of calories burned through the duration of the jumping. My name is Pru and I apporove this message! LOL0
