Any fishers out there?

I need to get my boyfriend a fishing pole as part of his 4 year anniversary gift. Any suggestions? I'm clueless about such things.

what kinda fishing is he going to be doing with this pole?? bigger fish(ex:spoonbill) you would need a sturdier pole. however most poles work well enough(unless you are of course fishing for bigger fish).

What does he currently use and what is his normal price range/how much do you want to spend?

Can't go wrong with a 7' medium heavy, fast action rod if it's for bass.

I just fish for fun, but I have the equipment to tournament bass fish.

Anything "Abu Garcia". Make sure the pole and reel are matching name brands. Match small reel with smaller pole and vice versa. If he is serious about fishing from a boat for bass then you will want to get him a bait casting reel. If he is a casual fisherman who usuall fishes from the shore for catfish or panfish then get him an open face reel.

He most typically will salt water fish in Newport, RI. He hasn't gone in a while due to work and his father selling all of his supplies a few years back. It is mostly for fun, but I know he would like a decent pole and to get back into this beloved hobby. I'm looking to spend under $50, because it is only a small portion of the gift....

Maybe ask one of his fishing buddies if he's been talking about a particular kind of pole.... also, the local fishing gear store can give advice. Or maybe tuck a gift certificate into a box of lures so he can select his own.

Get him an Ugly Stick. Pretty hard to get a half decent fishing rod for under 50 buck's:smile: ..IMHO.

Ulgy sticks are very good rods. They are nice and sturdy, well balanced and have a comfortable grip.

Great fishing in RI! Salt water you are going to be hard pressed getting something other than a "kiddie" set for that price. I have a pretty mid level nothing special reel that was $200 not including rod. Box stores will carry ugly sticks of several varieties and they are definitely good for the money less than 75 or so. Had a bunch growing up and took lots of abuse. Older Michel reels are awesome if you old find one. Penn and Abu will also be good. You will get exactly what you pay for though. 50 will hopefully last ost of a season as the salt water is terribly coorosive. Good luck! I think southern ma somewhere has a new cabellas or bass pro shop, they have it all.

Salt water is out of my realm. I am sure that is MUCH more expensive of a fishing hobby than fresh water fishing. $50 isnt much at all to work with but I have to agree that for the money Ugly Stick is the way to go. I think the Abu Garcia rod I have set me back about $150 and the reel was around $100 as well. Maybe ebay?
