kicking the coffee habit?

So who else had kicked this habit? I really want to stop drinking it but how? Any of you out there who have given this up and how did you do it?????? I almost want to give my keurig away so I dont have any means to make it...HELP!!!!

I also tried to stop drinking coffee, but I love it too much. What I did was to lower the amount. Little by little I reduced, first the cup/mug size and them started reducing the cup amounts during the day. I went from four large mugs of coffee, cream and sugar a day (sometimes five) to only one in the mornings. I know is not perfect but it works for me. It also helped changing my eating habits, lowering carbs and sugar during the day and eating a low carb lunch, That way I don't have the "crash" at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 in the afternoon. I gave up coffee 2.5 years ago over a week of holidays by sleeping a lot and drinking TONS of water. 4 days of headache was very painful, but after the headache subsided, it wasn't as tough (but I very determined).
After 3 weeks I started to really notice a difference in how I slept, exercised, felt, everything. And now I can honestly say it was the best thing I ever did.

(Yes, I still miss it, but I feel so amazing it is just not worth it for me. I always found caffeine really affected me badly.)0 -
why do you want to stop drinking caffeine? or is it just coffee in general? caffeine is a natural fat burner I use it in conjunction with cardio but if you really want to kick the habit then switch to green tea which also has caffeine in it, slowly drink less and less each day to get your body used to having less caffeine0

There are health benefits to drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day. Same for green tea. Why do you want to quit? I personally have no interest in cutting out coffee; there are too many benefits beyond the fact that I like it.
Studies have show coffee can reduce the risk of liver disease, overal mortality for women, parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. It's not actually a diuretic if consumed in moderation so unless you were drinking more than 6 cups a day there shouldn't be many reasons to stop.0 -
I recently had to do this myself, for now at least. The main reason is that I literally drank nothing but coffee all day every day, and the creamer I used was causing me some serious problems in the caloric department.
It's probably not the healthiest option in the world, but I switched to Coke Zero. Caffeine is awesome, but I was just not willing to deal with the extra calories to have it in coffee form. I also hate plain water with a burning passion, and black coffee has never been my thing.0 -

Switch to tea. Try an earl gray and put a little cream/ milk into it - maybe even a littel splenda if that's how you took your coffee. You can steep it heavy if you prefer. Then branch out into some flavored ones. Stash makes an awesome Lavendar one. I also enjoy the Mighty Leaf brand.
There's so many options for tea and it's so much better for you. Somehow it's helped w/ my water intake too. I'm more thirsty for water than when I drank coffee.
Now, I only have coffee on the weekends when my husband makes it. Two cups. I enjoy the splurge but don't think I'd drink it mid week again.0 -
Unless you're drinking some ridiculous amount of it, why would you want to stop? It's associated with health benefits and is enjoyable! Wouldn't it make more sense to quit things that are bad for you?0

How much are you drinking and with what? One or two cups can be beneficial, six or more is overkill. Unless you have an underlying medical condition you don't have to eliminate it if you enjoy it.0

so I drink about 2-3 cups a day..with lowfat cream only...
I want to give it up for a couple of reasons:
1. Does it really make you feeel great when you give it up?
2. Stains my teeth
3. Overall trying to lower my caffiene intake. I have noticed as I am getting older, getting sensitive to caffiene..0 -
I love black coffee and caffeine didn't seem to give me any trouble. I could easily skip a day of caffeine and not get the raging headache, I could also drink it before bedtime and not have a problem going to sleep. The problem with too much caffeine is that it taxes your kidney's or liver, can't remember which one of mine had an elevated level of something. Anyway, the doc and I went through a list of what could be causing it and I was taking in way too much caffeine; coffee during the day and then iced tea at night (all plain, no additives.) So I switched to decaf. It took quite a few tries to find a decaf coffee that was palatable, they just don't taste the same. I finally settled on Sbux Blonde Willow blend. Now I can drink the whole pot and feel pretty good about my health. Of course that doesn't mean I won't drink caffeine in my coffee, tea or diet coke; I just try and limit it to one or two of those a week.0

I drink 2 cups a day with some half and half and a splash of flavored creamer...
Coffee overall isn't bad and neither is caffine...
I went a month without coffee and realized I enjoyed it too much to ever give it up for good- for me it wasn't an addiction since I was able to give it up for a whole month.
I don't drink soda and other then tea I don't drink much of anything else but water.
However, I drink a large Camelback container (24 ounces) of water 1st thing in the morning...so I don't get my morning coffee until that is all gone. I don't allow myself to have another cup of coffee until i have drank two more containers of water. This way it forces me to drink my water and makes it almost like a treat.0 -

I would rather take the calorie hit from cream then put all the junk in a soda - to me that causes more inflammation issues in your body than 50 extra calories from some creamer.0 -
I LOVE my coffee!!! And as long as I keep it to no more than 2 cups a day the caffeine does not bother me. Good luck to you!! I could never do it!:drinker:0

The book 'Caffeine Blues' explains everything you need to know about caffeine and how to kick the habit. I have been off of all caffeine except chocolate for two years, and it is true about the natural energy you start to feel. My reason for having to give it up was the daily headaches and mood problems it was causing. Note that if you have it out of your system for a long time, you will be extra sensitive to it, and just a little bit might make you soar with euphoria for a moment, but the crash is intense. If I get a hankering for a soda, I have an occasional root beer, as most brands are caffeine free. Best of luck!0
