Don't understand MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone,

Well, I have pretty much reached my goal. I had body composition analysis last week, which confirmed a body fat percentage of 20.5%.

I don't understand what to do next regarding maintenance. Could someone explain what to do next without using a bunch of acronyms? I've tried to follow threads about maintenance before and none of them made much sense to me.

Is there a page on Myfitness.com that explains it?

What am I supposed to do and what will Myfitnesspal do automatically?

In a state of confusion,
Michele

I think you change your myfitnesspal goal to maintenance and it will calc it for you.

Go to My Home.Settings, scroll down to My diet/fitness plan, and at the bottom change it to maintenance.
  • Thanks, Mokey! I did that and my daily calorie goal went from 1200 to 1480! That's pretty close to what my body composition analysis estimated my resting metabolic rate to be, which was 1462 calories per day.

BTW, I love your profile picture. I love to run and cycle.

If your analysis says your BMR is 1462, then I would eat more than 1480 net. I would eat closer to 1700-1800 net. Or you can start with 1480 for a month, and reassess to see if you need to up it more.

You can eat way more than BMR in maintenance. Way, way more. Maintenance is really a different animal than losing weight. I find it really easy, you can take it way further than you ever thought and still maintain. You have a lot more flexibility.

I am not sure I agree.

All the longitudinal research on weight loss says it is much easier to take weight off than to keep it off. Most people - almost 75% - put it all back on in a year.

People who keep it off continue to monitor their diet very carefully (keep logging), exercise, and are flexiible about their foods. In other words, they weren't on a 'diet' (eating very special things or eliminating particular things), they ate small portions and watched their calories.

Exercise and consistent careful eating are the keys.

So if it were ME, I would either go to maintenance and eat that plus continue to exercise OR I would drop down to maybe 1/4 of a pound/week and continue to exercise.

In either case, I would continue to log and carefully watch my weight over the next few weeks to make sure I wasn't continuing to lose too much or starting to gain.

The recommendations are all models of your body. YOUR body will be a bit different than that depending on your age and metabolism. I'd make the transition cautiously.

I've been at maintenance for over a year now. My BMR is 1100 to 1200 depending on what calculator you use. If eat over about 1400 calories a day I start to gain. Even at that I usually get in about 1,000 calories a week of exercise on average and I don't eat any of those back.

If you've been eating at 1200 to lose I'd slowly add in 100 and then another 100 and see how it goes.

I'm close to maintenance and this is what I plan to do. I'm at 1300 now and will go to 1400 and see what happens.
