It's always dark! Exercise suggestions.

With fall here it's getting dark earlier and earlier at night and it's dark out until about 7am. I love to go walking first thing when I wake up, but I wake up at 5am. By the time 7am comes around I've already got laundry going, house cleaning is underway, etc and I'm no longer motivated to hit the track. If I don't exercise first thing in the morning, chances are pretty slim I will exercise later in the day!

I signed up for a gym that is opening nearby, but for the time being I am looking for exercises I can do in my home when I wake up or can't make it to the gym.

Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises or workout DVD's? I have Jillian's 30 day shred.. has anyone tried it?

Thanks!

I personally like running in the dark. I live in a small town though, so it's safe for me to do that. My husband always knows where I am and we have a lot of street lights. You can get headlamps to wear for outdoor activity in the dark.

As far as exercise DVDs, I really like the following:

The Firm - I have several of their DVDs and most of them are pretty good. They were doing cardio & weights before Jillian made it cool.
    Insanity
    P90X
    Biggest Loser Cardio Max
    Jillian's Yoga Meltdown

I've never done 30DS, but everyone raves about it. Just be sure to get a couple of rest days a week, no matter what you decide to do.
  • Hi, I alternate between the gym and work out dvd's and old vhs tapes that I have...I like step aerobics and weights and am more comfortable doing my upper body training from the comfort of my home with dumbells..anyways, I really like cathe fredericks work out dvds...most can be previewed on you tube...she is absolutely no joke but with practice you'll find that soon you catch on and can keep up...I also have some older Reebok Step the Video and the circuit training that I like...
  • Oh and yes I also have Jillian Michaels 30 day shred I'm just not always in the mood for that type of work out..I like it but wish it had a better flow and that they were more on beat with the music...I also have p90x but don't use it often...I need a quick and effective workout that I really like when I'm at home..

I also like running in the dark (usually at night, not mornings)...and as long as your wear something reflective or brightly colored and you are on a sidewalk or low traffic road, it's pretty safe (in my neighborhood anyways). But i you can't do that and you can't make i to the gym, I really like Zwow's (look up Zuzka Light on Youtube). They are free, super intense, minimal equipment workouts that can be done in less than 30 mins at home, inside, outside, where ever.

same thing happens to me. if i dont make it to the gym the chances of me working out at home are slim to none. i have a few dvds (the firm which is great, julian and some other ones) i must say that the julian are pretty good. and i find that if i dont jump from my bed to the hit put my tennies shoes on(sometimes i dont even do that) and hit play....i wont work out. if willpower is strong you might can get it together and do it in the evenings (then of course ur body is warmed up and youll have a hard time falling asleep)

I just started the 30DS and am loving it! I do it first thing in the morning when I get out of bed. Plan to move to the Ripped in 30 when I complete the 30DS. On weekends when I have more time, I usually add Shaun T's Hip Hop Abs after the 30 DS. I'm not very coordinated so my movements don't look just like his, but its alot of fun & definately a good workout!
  • Hi! Her 30 Day Shred will definitely keep you burning calories! I'm a huge Jillian fan! If you get burned out on watching videos, make notes of exercises you want to try, listen to tunes and do your own thing for 30 minutes. Or get those reflective bands and head to the street. Does the high school in your city/town have a track? Maybe you'd feel more safe there. Good job trying to find alternatives instead of just giving in!! :drinker:
  • I've never tried Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, but sometimes when I get home late and want to do a quick workout I search youtube they always have tons of workout videos, some as quick as 5 minutes. Trying new workouts always keeps me from getting bored and stay motivated. Also a lot of bloggers list workouts, you could try googling some! This is one of my favorites from a blogger http://www.pbfingers.com/2012/01/15/at-home-workouts/
It's quick but effective, it always leaves me sweating!

Jump rope, fitness hula hoop, calisthenics, dancing In the winter, I like to get DVDs from the library or netflix, that way I have different things to choose from.
  • Here's a work out that surely gets you sweating and you can do it in your own home:
    5 Body Weight Squats
5 In & Outs (Get into a pushup position and bring your legs in and out, work your abs. If you don't feel ready to do that then bring one leg in at a time.)
5 Push Ups (On your knees if you have to)
    5 Jump Squats
One rotation counts as one set, do as many sets as you can in 15-30 minutes. I do this workout on Mondays and it always kicks my *kitten*.
