HRM question

I bought a Mio HRM this past weekend. The sales rep at Scheels recommended it over the FP. It seems to work great when I am dry. But tried to use it swimming and it wouldn't record my heart rate. Takes it at the wrist. Didn't want one with the chest band. It is good to 30 meters in water. So not sure why it won't work.

Any one else have this problem? Does anyone swim with the FP series? Probably will take it back. Just doesn't suit my need. But not sure if I should spend the extra $10 on the other one if it won't record heart rate in the water either.

    I meant FT7. Not FP.

They must make extra profit on the Mio--no one who knows anything about anything would ever recommend a Mio over a Polar.

^Don't agree, if you mention you absolutely don't want a chest strap, then mio is the way to go. I have a mio, and I gotta say it's a piece of crap compared to polars and what they can do. That being said I also got mine for 20 dollars so I can't complain. Also, my polar friend was complaining what a piece of crap mio was so he decided to test his heart rate on both of them and both of them kept the same reading down to the last digit. We were both surprised lol. Since then I've considered it reliable, but it doesn't have a chest strap, so I don't expect it to have contact all the time.

HRM's dont work underwater!.... they work by measuring electrical current, hence the water ruins that!.....

If you want to track your swim calories than i recomend a PoolMate Pro... thats what i use, although if your a strong swimmer (with a pace of about 3km per hour) than MFP is incredably accurate on the burns, although it has to be constant swimming... so when i say i swim for 1hr it is 1hr solid covering 3km!

You'll never get a monitor without a chest strap that is accurate. The Polar chest straps are very soft and comfortable and they will work for swimming if you make sure it's tight enough to stay in contact with your skin.

I even the sales guy I wanted it for swimming. I am relatively new. I swim non-stop for 40 minutes and huff and puff. But I do it. I was so frustrated last night when I kept stopping trying to get it to pick up my heart rate.

Can I use the chest strap in the water?

Or if I use PoolMate Pro can I use it for other exercising (running, eliptical, etc)?

I paid $79+tax for my Mio so it wasn't cheap. Ecspecially since it doesn't do what I told him I needed it for.

    Thanks all.
