Question about measurements...

Ok, this might be a really stupid question, but I really am not sure about the answer so I thought I'd ask... When people post their progress and all of their before and after measurements and then sum it up by saying for example: While doing the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred I lost 2.5 inches... what do they mean by that? It doesn't seem to be a cumulative of all the inches that they lost on all the different measurements or even an average of all the different losses... I guess I am just confused on how you get the overall measurement los in inches?

That is usually what they mean - they add up all the total inches, which seems weird and kind of meaningless to me, but I guess it's motiviating for them so rock on. I think "I lost x inches off my <bodypart>" makes a lot more sense, personally.

I agree. Unless everyone is taking all the same measurments, the I lost __ inches is meaningless. You can be taking 5 measurements, 12 measurements, 50? We don't know.

Yeah, I always thought that was weird too. If I lost an inch from my hips and an inch from my waist, then I lost an inch of fat, not two inches! :grumble:

But it still makes me feel better especially if I am going through a spell where I am not showing much change on the scales. And what is this nonsense about an inch off my hips and an inch off my butt is still only one inch of fat?! I hate it when people get all scientific and logical about things like this.

I'd suggest measuring in as many places as you can and then totalling your figures. We need all the encouragement we can get.

Well feel free to do what you need to do for motivation. Personally, I try to be as accurate as possible. My profile page title is "Being honest with myself." I care not what others do. I'm here for me. I just don't think it makes any sense, but you are free to do as you will. :flowerforyou:
