Got some bad news...

I learned today that I have an umbilical hernia :(

Now I'm scared to exercise for fear that I might make it worse. It's not painful but I am to get surgery within the next 3 weeks.
Then who knows what kind of exercise I can do...
Popped out Monday night while doing plank and pushup centered workout. Lovely. I can push it back in. Gross.

sigh...guess I'll have to keep the diet in check in the mean time. I'm not looking forward to loosing any strength gains I have made though...

so my question for MFP peeps is- have you ever had a hernia? how long before you could exercise normally? and what kind of exercise was ok for you?
Doc said running, cardio is ok. But I like to lift weights and do Bodyrock style interval training- which has lots of planks/pushups and core stabilizing...

I had an umbilical hernia for years and finally had it operated on the summer of 2011. This was before my MFP days so I wasn't doing any exercises, I was not allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds for about 3 weeks, after that the doctor said to listen to my body and do what was comfortable. I took about 2 months before I felt all the way better.

I found out that I had a hernia on my 26th Bday... Doc said I could resume normal workouts after a few weeks. It will depend on the type of repair they do. I kept it very light for probably 2 to 3 months only out of fear. But back then I didn't workout like I do now. I got mine from lifting my daughter into shopping carts.

I was born with an umbilical hernia - I had it repaired when I was 4. (It popped way out and changed colour so it became too serious to live with)

After the surgery I wasn't allowed to run - but I still did. Nothing bad happened.

As a very young child no running was the only restriction - I cannot remember ever feeling any pain before or after surgery.

    Good luck with everything!!

The real danger is a rupture, be careful.

    Thanks!

Any other people who got one while trying to work out regularly?
