I have been trying to lose weight since Feb last year after the birth of my son. I was weighing in at 231 and now a year later I am 248. I have barely been dedicated to my programme for more than a week straight before I derail and just stop caring. Then the next day I start afresh again only to not follow through yet again.

I have 1850 calories per day but usually go over it as I will have junk food without even thinking of the consequences.

I am not doing any 'diet' as such but I want to change my ways for life by eliminating these foods that I find it so hard to say no to. How oh how oh how do I stop falling into this silly trap?

Obviously just writing this is helping though as it shows just how silly I have been...

Anyones thoughts would be appreciated...

Maybe you are trying too much at once. Instead of changing all your eating habits at the same time, look for a few small changes that you can make a habit and then move on to something else. It is less overhelming that way. Maybe your first change is to eat 3-5 servings of veggies everyday. After a couple of weeks, that will be a habit. If you are the rewards kind of person, pick something as a reward when you've mastered this habit. Then you move on to tackling not eating chips or drinking enough water or getting more exercise. After a while, you will have made all sort of small changes that make a HUGE difference.

I'm doing this for the same reason's you are. I had my daughter and was 204 pounds, it took me about 7 months to really dedicate to mfp and myself. I found that using small rewards when I reached a mini goal/goal I really tried harder. Some of my goals are buying a new clothing item, mani/pedi, full body massage, buying a new kitchen item and so on. DON'T make food your reward, it ends up being part of the down fall.

Some how you need to take some kind of addiction you may have (yes we all have one or another) into working out and eating healthy. As you can see I quit smoking, when I first started instead of smoking I would cook, and not just cook but create my favorite recipes but as healthy as I could. Also I've found I am TOTALLY addicted to exercising, you just have to find what works for you, trial and error! This won't happen overnight unfortunatly but w/ the right motivation and determination you'll reach your goals!

    Good luck!

Try to start replacing the junk food in the house with healthier snack alternatives, such as fiber bars, (eat too many and you'll know it!) sugar free pudding or jello, 100 cal popcorn snacks (with a large water will fill you for hours). If we have the real sweets in the house I have no control no matter how good I have been. I still enjoy them as a treat but not every day.

I went through the same thing for years. Saying, "OK, I am going to lose weight be comfortable with myself." then I would forget for a few months, then do it again. But, recently on Thursday's at my job, i am FORCED to look at myself in various mirrors all day (housecleaning) and couldn't get over how repulsed I was by my own body. The only mirror I have in my house is in the bathroom from the chest up. I always deleted pictures taken of me, and I was lying to myself. Then I couldn't lie anymore and ever since then I have been serious about it. I seriously want to change, be healthier, and now that the weight is coming off and I feel so much better, that just gives me even more motivation.

Fake it 'til you make it. Like anything, saying no takes practice, and that means suffering through the feelings that come along with not eating what we want. You'll get better at it the more you do it.

Find your motivation- something big. Make it about your health, make it about living a happier, more fulfilling life...find what really motivates you, and focus on that. Once you have your motivation, you have to do whatever it takes to make that happen, and eventually you have to realize that the junk food and the overeating won't get you there.
  • I have a suggestion for you...it is something that works but isn't so much a "diet" and is easy to add to your lifestyle. Choose one or two days a week to eat totally vegan, or at least vegetarian. I suggest vegan, as it eliminates fatty foods like cheese, milk, and eggs while a vegetarian diet allows those things. By doing this just a few days a week you will eliminate so many calories and still get to eat good food. When I first went vegan I lost a lot of weight, and I felt great! (my problem now is that i eat way too much due to stress) And since you mentioned you have a child, having your children and the rest of your family join you could make it even easier for you to stick to it. Have your whole family get involved in thinking of new recipes and things to eat, and since you won't be doing it alone it will help you keep going after those first few days.

If you ever want any recipe suggestions, I have plenty and would love to share them, with anyone!

I would be interested in some of these recipes - would you mind starting a new thread, or sending some of your favorites to my inbox? That would be wonderful! Thanks!
