Weight loss happens because you eat within your budget, fitness happens because you exercise. Cycling is great exercise and will strengthen your legs and your abs but it won't peel weight off you. That comes from eating right.

Just to elaborate a bit on the above responses... "diet" and "eating right' basically mean eating at a calorie deficit. Go by the calorie limits you've set up here on MFP and eat at least 1/2 of your earned exercies. You cannot out exercise overeating (trust me, I've tried!) but if you have the right balance, you should lose weight.

Biking is an awesome activity to contribute to weight loss. You wouldn't believe how many calories you can burn in an hour on a saddle. Its also a lot of fun! The scenery, the speed, the wind, the burn, the exercise!

Obviously I love to ride my bikes.....

I agree! It's especially great if you have knees that hurt from doing high impact exercises like running, but want to give yourself more of a challenge then walking.

I assume you're talking about outdoor biking. How many calories burned will depend on the intensity of the biking. If you're coasting down hills or riding slowly or with a lot of starts and stops it's obviously not going to burn many calories.

You've probably heard a million times that you can't spot reduce. Depending on your body, you may build muscle or look more toned in the legs from cycling. Some people, depending on their genetics and how much body fat they have, might end up looking bigger.

If you want to lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. Keep cycling and observe what happens.

Riding a bike is a great way to lose weight and tone up. I don't know what these people are talking about saying that it only helps with fitness- It helps with EVERYTHING. I ride my bike 7 miles 5 days every week and I've lost 3 pounds each week since starting. I haven't changed my eating habits and my stomach and legs have never looked better. ;] So go ride!!

I am going back to the stationery bike -- its on the porch or I can move it indoor if the weather get too cold! It takes less space than the threadmill ( which I have at another location). I aim for 30-minutes .... and will up that in a couple of weeks!

    Happy rides!
