My friend and I have started alternating days at work where we spend our 30 minute lunch either walking the treadmill or walking up and down 6 flights of stairs. Today, we did the stairs. After we went to get some lunch because we still had some time left and when I sat down to eat I suddenly had low back pain and abdominal pain and nausea. I ran to the bathroom and threw up. When I came back I drank 20 oz of water and felt better. I was able to eat some turkey breast. This has never happened to me before.

has this ever happened to anyone before or does anyone know what caused this?

Congratulations, This has happened to almost every athlete.

You exerted yourself a tad past the limit. It's nothing to worry about and is often considered a badge of honor. You're body will be ready for those stairs next time.

Sorry, but that's a question for the doctor
  • Yep done it several times lately...latest was today after pushing myself an extra 5 flights of stairs on top of what I normally do. I've found that its a mix of pushing yourself a tad to far (then it can be a good thing or badge of honor as stated previously) and/or not eating enough before hand. If my morning snack and breakfast were too small (or I havent eaten anything since lunch before going to the gym in the early evening) the nausea will set in, after which I'll feel fine, and often times within an hour I'll be ravenous...so watch the two of those and you should be able to figure out what triggers it hopefully!

Yes, it used to happen a LOT when I was in high school and track season started...a lot of the runners ended up getting sick a time or two during and after practice. It shouldn't happen again, it just means that you worked a little harder than normal! :)
