Little bit of a rant....

i recently completed an entry and was over my calories, but MFP didn't say anything. WHen you are under calories, it says "You have completed the entry for today and were under your calorie goal!!" but you eat slightly over, and all it says is, you completed your diary. This is one reason i think there should be a range!

Ok now here's the part that really gets to me - and i hope nobody becomes offended by what i say. People on MFP are supposed to be here to start a healthy lifestyle. Often i will see people complete their diary entry, and are under their calorie goals. So out of curiosity, boredom, and complete procrastination, i will check out the diaries. And i'll see things people ate like mcdonald's, pizza hut, a giant candy bar, etc etc etc. and most often, because of the huge snacks they are eating, they don't put their meals in. Usually i will see breakfast and lunch, a bunch of unhealthy snacks, and no dinner. i dont' understand people's mentality on this. I thought the whole point of posting your calories and allowing other member's to view them was to be accountable. Those people are either not eating dinner - unhealthy - or eating dinner and not logging it - lying and cheating themselves.

I don't say anything to anyone, cause i'm the one being the kreeper and looking at other members' diaries. and i guess it's everyone's own decision. it's just frustrating when i see these people losing tons of weight, meanwhile everything i put in my mouth gets logged and i work out every single day and the scale and my measurements aren't going down.

ok, that's my rant. i hope this doesn't offend anyone.

Eek! You're making me glad my food diary is set to private.

I see what you're saying but you never know where people are at in their lives. KWIM? Is it the inital step in evaluating their lifestyle and just how much they actually eat? A lot of people are going to have a McDonalds or Pizza Hut on there initially, and hopefully over time those indulgences are less frequent. Filling in a food diary at all is a pretty big step in the right direction.

It does seem a bit unfair, doesn't it?

And the overall truth of the matter is that some people aren't ready to fully commit to the real changes it takes. I *never* in a zillion years thought I'd be the type to measure food - count crackers - and take time to figure out what I'm eating all the time. Good lord, what kind of anal retentive FREAK does THAT? Welllllll .. ahem.... apparently me - when I'm ready to fully immerse myself. People don't really always know themselves as well as they think and they might want to be ready and change their life but just aren't quite there yet.

Personally, my hope for those folks who are logging in this manner, is that eventually they realize the pattern and do something with it. It could be in a month it could be in a year it could be in 20 years. But no matter what, as long as they are here, they're learning something and that is the best resource and tool of all. When they ARE ready, they'll be armed with a TON of knowledge and hopefully just as much support. And, if they're here - no matter how or what they're logging - it'sa step in the right direction. There's some awareness of the faultiness of their lifestyle. Some people's baby steps are smaller than others. :-)

I thought the whole point of posting your calories and allowing other member's to view them was to be accountable. Those people are either not eating dinner - unhealthy - or eating dinner and not logging it - lying and cheating themselves.

I think that's certainly ONE of the reasons someone would chose to have their diary public, but it's certainly not the only reason. Just to give you an example, I am gluten-intolerant and chat regularly on here with others that cannot have gluten. I am considering making my diary public as a way to share my meal and snack ideas with others that cannot have gluten. It can be a challenge in some ways to not tolerate gluten, and it's helpful to share ideas.

Also, I don't think there is anyone on here for any length of time that hasn't had a bad, or even terrible day or week. I think we've all planned cheat meals and cheat days- few and far between, but they still do exist. I think that that's up to them, and to be honest, I give them credit for keeping their diary public even though it isn't perfect. I understand where you're coming from, but I think that unless you know that person's whole story, you can't necessarily get frustrated with their food selection.

Whether you've been on MFP for a long time or just began, we all started somewhere. We have all had eye-opening meals, snacks, desserts, days, etc. and I think that it's great that people are still logging during those times so that they can learn from them rather than not log it because someone might see it and be bothered by it.

    Just my opinion...

well maybe thats your problem. if youre not giving yourself a treat now and then, youre working out and getting nothing for it. ive lost a ton of weight. over 50lbs since november. i have starbucks every morning mon-fri and usually one on the weekend when i take my sons to the store or where ever. its my treat. if you constantly work out and eat nothing but healthy food then you can quickly get burned out and bored and then get off track. thats what happened to me. i lost a ton of weight and then in february i just got the munchies like crazy. i would eat and be hungry right after i ate. it went on for two weeks. two weeks i didnt lose anything and one week i gained 2lbs. i was able to get back on track and i started losing weight again but im behind where i wanted to be. now im stressed out again and started getting off track today.

honestly you sound more mad at yourself and are taking it out on others. have you truely looked at whats going on in your life and how that may be a factor of why youre not losing weight? how many calories are you eating? what are you doing for exercise? i have a lot of tips that could help you. if you ever want to chat, hit me up.

ok yes, i was a little bit over the top. i am pretty frustrated with myself. and i do understand that some people can't make a complete 180 in one day. i feel bad about my post now. i guess i just have really high expectations for myself, and therefore for others as well. i know nobody is perfect, especially me, because if i was i probably wouldn't have posted that. i apologize if i made anyone feel bad or offended anyone.

Accountability is logging the crap you ate facing it and moving on. I have ate a lot of crap in my 18 months here, but I have also eaten a lot more good wholesome meals. A life change is not getting it right everyday it is moving forward with good eating habits despite having a crappy day.
    But that's just my opinion.

You know - I really appreciate threads like this. Although at face value, they may look "offensive" or "disturbing" or whatever - but there's a ton to be learned from this level of honesty and forthrightness.

Gluten free diet - someone who doesn't have to deal with any special dietary needs may never realize that keeping our diary's open has real value for others; although it may not be applicable its still new insight, new information, an opportunity to learn.

Upset with self - there was a little back and forth on this and it would appear that this is also a potential new insight that could be very beneficial, both in the long and short term.

Others - perhaps by expressing these sentiments honestly, those who are falling off the wagon or eating junk or whatever it is they are doing read it and say "you know what - my diary IS crap - it's time to change!". It could be the right kind of motivation for someone.

Would any of these opportunities arisen without this posting? Maybe. We'll never know. I personally got something new out of this thread. It never occurred to ME that it would be helpful to look at other people's diaries for ideas - I mean it did from a nutritional standpoint but not for just a pure menu perspective (ie: oh - THAT's what they had to get their iron up vs What a great lunch and oh look - this had a ton of iron too!).

Someone used to tell me all the time: attitude is everything. perspective is implied. we see things the way we want to see them.

Agreed! I'm feeling a deja vu all over again on this thread. Isn't this exactly how the 'cheating' thread began:indifferent:

Gotta love the alternatives to open food diary so a person doesn't get so scrutinized! Private or key for me!:smokin:
