My Heavy Lifting Wife/ Progress

Here is a picture of my lovely wife. She began Starting Strength with my help back in mid July. She has always been small at 5'5" and 112 lbs so she didn't have to lose weight like most of us (I know, we hate her!! lol) But, she had little strength or muscle conditioning and little noticable muscle mass. She was at about 19% BF when she started. She is 53. She has been doing her workout only 2x per week.
Now she has great muscle development and has gone from kind of shapeless to having an awesome shape. The most noticable improvement has been wthat you can seen in her upper body in these pictures and in what you can't: her once saggy butt that is now smoking hot!! (trust me!!) All this after just 90 days. Also, her weight has actually gone up 6 lbs to 118.
I am very proud of her for accomplishment and very happy as her husband that she has taken charge of her health and that she look better than ever to me!! She also has a mild form of MS that affect mostly her right side. The compound lifts have been great for the development of the neural pathways to overcome the damage where she has scar tissue from past lesions that effect her balance and motor function. She just had a visit with her neurologist and her was thrilled with her condition right now.
So for all you ladies that are wondering about lifting, the result speaks for itself!

At 53 years old, having 19% body fat while never lifting is really impressive. After what I've witnessed, exercise really helps with MS. We have a lady at our gym who started using the recumbent bike and compound lifts. At first, she could only last about 2 minutes on the bike - now she does about 30 minutes. She's also been increasing her lifts as well, and just like your beautiful wife, has surprised and pleased her doctors at her amazing progress.0

I also have MS so this is very encouraging. I have found that my balance first improved with yoga and once I got my balance back I was able to exercise in other ways. I can now ride a bike again and I do lift weights but not to that extent yet. One of the biggest problems I see in most people with MS is muscle atrophy. I have fought that for the past 15 years. Even when I was stuck in bed for 18 months unable to walk more than a few feet and couldn't keep my eyes open for more than 10 minutes I at least did stretching. My husband was my best source of support. If she is having problems walking I highly recommend a treadmill with good grab bars. And yes I used to hang on for dear life to keep from falling. I'm now able to jog which I never could do even before MS.

I am so glad that lifting has been able to improve her MS. That is worth it all in itself.0

Thats about how I started. Got a stationary bike and at first could only do 10 minutes but am up to 30 almost every day. I used to only be able to walk around the house and had to sit once I got to the next room. A lot to be said for persistence because now I walk at a fast pace for 30 minutes to an hour depending on the outside temps. The cooler the weather the longer I can walk. Heat is not the friend of people who have MS.
I hope you do post more photos of your wife. I would love to see the full effects of her accomplishments. Top to Bottom! I bet she looks fantastic all around.0 -

If I'm not being too nosy, when you talk about scar tissue from lesions and how the weight lifting helped... were these lesions on the brain or elsewhere? I'm curious if weight training could help scar tissue on the spinal cord.0 -

Her's are mostly on the brain, but some do get them on the spinal cord. I don't know as much about retraining or developing neural pathways on the spinal cord. Sorry, I'm not more helpful there.0 -
