I just started P90x three days ago and am really loving it! I changed my %s for fat, protein and carbs on my food diary. My question is do I HAVE to follow his food or can I eat what is in my house as long as keep my %s and calories right? We eat very healthy at my house it is just that we have a lot of food allergies so it will really bump up my food bill to make a lot of this stuff and I will be the only one eating them.
Will it effect my results?

Thank you all for the help!
Amanda

i'm pretty sure its just the percentages/calories that matter.

I have heard that following his guide will help your results. I probably will follow it when I do P90X in August/September.

But then again, how will you know because you can't test following his nutrition plan and not following his nutrition plan at the same time under the same conditions.

I, too, am just starting P90X and I don't think i am going to follow his guide... I dont eat meat really, and I don't eat a lot of what's on there. I say that as long as you eat healthy, it shouldn't be an issue!

KZOsMommy: LOVE THE TICKLER!! I also have a Colts one (Manning) on mine! WhooHooo!

I did 2 rounds and am on my 3rd, I didn't follow the guide although I have increased my protein for round 1, just not to the level suggested in the program, and I had good results.

erickirb- Thank you! Wow on your third round! I am so glad to hear that you have had good results! I am so excited about doing this and I hope to see some great muscle results  My idea right now is going through it doing the lean phase and then second time do the classic and the third time I want to do the double, call me crazy but I LOVE it!!!

That sounds like a good plan doing all three types with increasing difficulty each time. My last round was similar to doubles in that I added in additional cardio 2-3 times per week. My wife thought I was too thin when done, I disagree as my arms and chest were as big as when I was 5 pound heavier.

I've done 3 rounds of P90X and followed the nutrition guide very closely, for the first round. The 2nd round, I followed the 30 day phased eating, although switched up the meals, while staying within my fat/protein/carb ratio.

I will say that the nutrition is a HUGE part of success to P90X. If you aren't a meat person, there are plenty of alternatives to get your protein, such as Shakeology, Tofu, poultry or fish.

My biggest and BEST recommendation for any new P90X'er, is to follow the phased eating as they have it laid out for the 30 day increments. It's paramount in shedding fat (first 30 days), rebuilding energy (2nd 30 days) and endurance (last 30 days). There is a method and strategy to it, so user's can get the best results. If you don't eat properly with this type of workout system, you could a) slow your results and/or b) risk serious fatigue and lack of energy.

I hope this helps. I'm a Beachbody Coach, so have plenty of tips and suggestions, if anyone has questions. I've also got all the PDF documents to track your workouts and a great quick reference for the nutrition approach. Feel free to email me: taryn@choose2befit.com.

    Best of luck to all!

I know for sure that if i followed the guide I would get even better results :). I've followed plans similar to his in the past to a T and had great success and learned what I needed to learn from them. Also, taken grip loads of supplements. I of course recommend doing it if you have never done one of these - even if you dont keep it up the rest of your life you learn something from it.

The reason I am not doing it this time is because unlike when I was out of shape in the past, I am really not that far out of wack fitness wise from where I want to be. Food wise the takeway for me now is just trying to figure out how to get more whole foods back into my diet without sacrificing some of my culinary love affairs. Want to keep it balanced with small, but long term changes.

My real love for P90x stems from the fact that I now have a workout that kicks my gym workouts butt and I don't have to bother with the gym anymore and thinking about how i'm going to work it in when i'm at the office late etc.. I preferred to be fit from more outdoor activities like surfing and running, but at home is a close second....the gym sucks- its ultimate boredom to me and has always just been will power driven.

I too am doing P90X. My husband and I are in week 9. Nutrition is a very key factor. There is a lot of help on the Beachbody web site and the lady (choose2befit) below is an actual coach. So take advantage of that. I know that eating too little is not a good idea on this plan. So you should get your caloric intake correct.

Your body weight times 10= your resting metabolic rate
Your resting metabolic rate times 20 %= daily activity burn
Your RMR + Daily activity burn + 600 (for the p90x workouts)= energy amount needed.
It will seem like a lot. It did to me. If you want to lose weight subtract 500 from your energy needed amount.

    Hopefully that makes sense.

breadlove- Thank you for the help! Is there a way on beach body for choose2befit to be my coach? Today is the first day I am checking out there website. Ok so according to your chart there I should be eating 2280 calories!!! REALLY that is nuts! No wonder yesterday i was so darn hungry. If I want to loose a little more weight should I minus the 500 or will that come with toning? I am 140 now and a size 4/6 so I am happy where i am just still flabby lol.

Thank you so much for the help you are all WONDERFUL! SOrry for all the questions!

Taryn - Are you actually pictured on the P90X ads that show on MFP?!

 I just saw the ad again and it had your name on it. That's AWESOME! I've seen a lot of the success stories and transformation pictures and have to tell your "after" picture is exactly what I want mine to look like.

Well is that 2280 your total minus the suggested 500 calorie deficit? If you are that small to begin with I think I would stick to the workout and the calories and keep checking it each phase. It doesn't seem like you need to lose weight?
We are in phase 3 where the hugest results are to be seen. So as you progress your 'flab' will get tighter.

I actually put on weight when I started this program. Still haven't lost it all. But I am in WAY better shape and have much bigger muscles.

breadlove- The 2280 is without the 500 taken out. Ok I will see how it goes eating that much. Wow I have not eaten that many calories in a long time.

I use a heart rate monitor and burn anywhere from 500-850 calories per workout. It will vary a ton from person to person so your best bet would be to either just use what the nutrition plan estimates of 600 calories per workout, or invest in a HRM.

so if you want to use the listed exercises, here's a close approximation:

for the workouts and plyo: use 'circuit training' --- they are all mostly supersets which basically makeup bigger circuits.
for yoga: hatha yoga - yes the vinyasa yoga we do is slightly more calorie burning than this one lists
    for kenpo: cardio
core synergistics --- this one really depends on how you do it, its easy enough for me so i called it light aerobics...im never going to do it again personally, would rather run and do abs afterwards.

I don't want to go against anyone's advice here but FOR ME........I didn't follow the eating plan. I watch what I eat during the week and eat what I want on the weekend (within reason) I started at 148 the combined cardio and strength training of it got me down to 118 and I'm 5'6" and toned me up nicely. I didn't follow the work outs strictly that time but am this time and I'm 2 weeks in.......

  • As far as following the eating plan, if you are not familiar with calorie counting it could be helpful because we often underestimate our calorie consumption. However if you are able to count your own calories eating what you have is fine but be aware that the eating plan is designed to give the the highest quantity of quality food so you stay full and maximize your alloted calories, you might feel as though you are not getting enough to eat if your food selections are not nutrient dense enough.
Also make sure you are getting enough protein when you do this exercise, I am doing Insantiy and as a nutrition professional, the muscle building requires increased protein to help you rebuild... good luck!!!
