Lifting weights

This may sound like a stupid question but my sister and I are looking for a weight lifting exercise that will help us with toning our glutes and abs. What would you all suggest for this? We have a ways to go but are looking to start this soon.
Let me rephrase here a bit. I am a member at the YMCA and being a single working mother it is sometimes difficult to go to the gym to workout. I can only work out when they have toddler time so I can drop my kids off and do my thing. On the days that I cannot get to the gym I workout to the wii (often time using 3lb weights).

Deadlifts, squats, and planks will strengthen these areas. But a caveat - you can do these exercises until you're blue in the face but you aren't going to see the results if they are covered by a layer of fat.0

I use online videos - you can search for weight toning exercises quite easily (without wanting to post about another fitness site)
A can of beans is about a kilogram so you can start with those as your weights if you don't have any.
I do a ten minute toning video every day for the arms - biceps, triceps, row and push ups. By doing it at home I don't have to face the gym (!) and I try and make it part of my routine - if I'm not out in the evening, I must do the video. Just in front of the telly.
I also do a stomach one (crunchless abs usually) at the same time.
I really notice the difference after a few weeks of 3-4 times a week and recommend it highly!0 -
Try blogilates.com. There is tons of workout videos all for free and loads for abs and butt.0

Yes I do that. Anything that consists of going to the gym has to work around a difficult schedule. I however do quite a bit to the wii.I would but I dont know how cause I have issues cause I am a working single mom.

Not to be a pain in the *kitten*, but your thread title is "lifting weights," but then you poo-poo the suggestion to lift weights?
A full body program like Stronglifts 5x5 will do great things for your abs and bum. It's just five basic moves and you do it three times a week. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/4601-stronglifts-5x5-for-women
Even if you don't go for heavy lifting with barbells, an adjustable set of dumbbells can get you some pretty amazing progress and not take up a ton of space.0 -

This and deadlifts (heavy weights with good form)0 -
All types of weighlifting exercises can assist you with toning. Dumbbells and Kettlebells are small and can be used inside the home if time and going to the gym are issues.0

I wasnt saying that I wont/cant do it. I was simply saying that it is sometimes tough to get to the gym. Also that it is tough for me to be able to take classes. I am more then willing to do the work. Heck I am the one that brought it up to my sister that we needed to start lifting the weights at least one day a week. I am doing what I can to get to the gym. Believe me I am more then willing to get rid of this bottom and my stomach. I dont have very high confidence and despise the way I look.I would but I dont know how cause I have issues cause I am a working single mom.
