okay, so pretty much all of my life ive disliked sweet stuff

i can go an entire month without sugar/chocolate and be perfectly happy

but of course i have my vices (salt, grease, savory, fried)

however when im discussing vices with other people, especially females, i find myself incredibly embarrassed that im not all, "OMG I NEED MY CHOCOLATE WHEN TOM IS HERE!!!"

i even googled it and the general consensus is that guys like salty/savory and girls like sweet/chocolaty

for some reason, even though i have a pretty great self esteem, im really embarrassed about not liking sweet things and preferring salty/savory things. it makes me feel like my tastes are more manly than girly

so anyways id like to discuss a few things:

~do you like savory/salty more than sweet?

~do you have anything about your dietary habits that totally embarrasses you or makes you self conscious and if so what?

~is gender really a factor in sweet vs salty or is that just a stereotype?

I've never heard about gender and taste buds. I don't think it's weird, I wish I could not like sweets :) I love sweets( chocolate, cake, candy) and savory foods(chips, french fries, cheese, burgers) and I'm a girly girl, definitely not a guy.

to be honest, i was NEVER a chocolate girl, and i mean ever! i loved candy, but fruity stuff... nothing too rich... that all changed when i quit eating sweets... ive never craved chocolate more in my entire life! but i quite enjoy salty foods... and i dont think gender has much to do with what you crave. but thats my personal opinion... and actually im pretty confident in all my food choices, i always make choices due to what i want and nothing else. my cravings dont ruin me nor does binging, but i consider myself lucky considering i have a tremendous amount of control over what i eat.

i definatly rather savory to sweet food so your not the only one when its my tom i crave kfc lol havnt eaten it km about a year but i still miss it.

one thing i really have trouble doing is eating in front of other people and i would rather not eat than to eat on my own around people is that odd?

i don't think it is a gender thing my oh craves sweets and eats them all the time

I seem to go in phases....sometimes I way prefer savoury.....others, I can't get enough chocolate - does that mean sometimes Im more manly than others!?!

My partner has a really really sweet tooth, Im sure he is a chocoholic!! He is in no way feminine!!

I get a little bit embarrassed at the amount of food I eat, not really the type!! I tend to have lots of snack, although it seems to work for me. Loads of people comment though...."are you eating AGAIN?" "good god Fran how much do you eat in a day?" that sort of thing! But I stick to my cals and the weight is coming off so I try not to worry about it! :blushing:

I am totally 100% there with you. I can go ages without chocolate or sweets. Since my healthy eating started all I crave is saltly, savoury foods. My TOM always has me hanging for salty meat and before my diet I use to tuck in to fresh cooked bacon joints from Tesco. I wish I did like chocolate but I don't really.

My work mates go through Slabs of Dairy Milk like its going out of fashion and they don't understand why I don't eat it.

Oh and as for embarrassing things, its being around others who don't understand why I am dieting and having to weigh or measure out my food so I can log it. :ohwell:

No one ever believes me when I say I'm not big on sweets. Truth be told, I've eaten more sweet things in the last month than probably the last 5 years combined. I'm a salt freak.

But if it IS sweets, it's like, nutty, chocolatey, coffee flavors. Nothing fruity. Skittles, gummy bears, jolly ranchers...they all make me wanna gag. haha

I'd rather eat salty over sweet any day.

I love salty stuff and I think I'm a girly girl, certainly in the sense that I love to do girly stuff like shopping and being with my friends lol! Will confess I also like to box and I love the gym. I don't think it has anything to do with gender, it's just they way we are, we're all different, thank God.

I do feel bad about the fact that I could happily polish off an entire family bag of Doritos, but I'm learning to curb my salt cravings.

Don't feel bad about the way you are, just celebrate your individuality

Same here!!! I can easily live without chocolate - give me a multi pack of crisp any day!! Whereas hubbie cannot go a day without eating chocolate.....luckily he"s super slim no matter what he eats (so jealous). Does that mean I'm more manly? Nope, it just means I don't like chocolate.... Vx

I'm not really a fan of sweets either. My weakness is salty crunchy stuff (chips, buttery popcorn, etc.). My husband who is in no way girly, loves pastries... :)

I've always been a salty/crunchy kind of girl. Sure, I have my sweet indulgences too, but if I were faced with a choice in front of me, I'd go salty/crunchy almost every time.

Of course, I was actually allergic to chocolate when I was a baby/toddler, so even though I no longer have that allergy, chocolate has never become a go-to kind of snack for me.

I am not really a big fan of chocolate or sweet stuff in general. Sometimes if it's there I'll eat it. But I don't ever crave it. I can go days without eating anything sweet. People think I am crazy but I think cheesecake is absolutely gross. I loooove salty stuff!! I can eat that all day long!!
  • hey, don't worry about it becaue i am EXACTLY the same way, if not more so! i hate anything sweet and i think the last time i ate a square of chocolate i had to spit it out because it was so gross! honestly, don't worry all my friends think it's really funny that i don't like anything sweet (including fruit) and they just laugh about it with me. to be honest not liking sweet things is the same as sombody not liking vegeables or meat, it's just the way that you're tastebuds work so you shouldn't be self conscious about it. xx

    I am female, age 51.
so anyways id like to discuss a few things:

~do you like savory/salty more than sweet?
For the most part yes. I don't dislike all sweet things, but more of my favorite foods are savory or spicy than sweet.
~do you have anything about your dietary habits that totally embarrasses you or makes you self conscious and if so what?
No, I don't care at all what anyone else thinks of my dietary likes or dislikes. I can't ever remember caring what others thought of what I eat.
~is gender really a factor in sweet vs salty or is that just a stereotype?
I have no idea. I had no idea there was such a stereotype.

I've never craved chocolate before even though I like it. But when I started tracking and told myself to limit sweets... after about two weeks of that I never wanted a bag of Reese's Pieces more in my entire life!

I'm staving that off with the occasional serving of Hershey's Kisses once a week when I really need it. XD

I could go months and months without chocolate or ice cream. Probably the only sweet item I have trouble passing up would be blackberry cobbler. I am a salt, peanuts and chip person, but I am doing real well dealing with that. I now eat almonds (unsalted) and that satisfies my cravings. It is a life-style change for me.

I go for salt and crunch more than sweet, I think. Or maybe they're about equal; I'm not sure.
But don't worry about deviating from averages; it's part of what makes you unique.

Actually I prefer salty and chocolate --- but could care less about most other "sweet" things.

Therefore, my favorite all-time snack is chocolate-covered pretzels --- the best of both worlds combined into one.

For that TOM cycle, I always craved salty/savory things - it's the only time I ever ate salt & vinegar potato chips.

So, no, it's not weird at all. I'm thinking you should just thank your lucky stars!
  • I craved lots of protein and salt when I was growing up and I still can't have sugar for breakfast, it makes me sick. But I definitely love my chocolate but I have cut way back on my chocolate intake.

If it makes you feel any better I would take anything I had for dinner leftovers and make it my breakfast for the next day. I still get a little embarrassed about it. :ohwell:
  • I prefer salty over sweet (the only exception is ice cream which is YUM). I also don't really like plain chocolate at all. If I have a piece of chocolate, it has to have something with it, such as peanut butter or almonds.

I don't think there's anything weird about that at all.

It's interesting that you mention this! I'm not at all bringing this up to agree/disagree, I just think it's interesting, but I recently met someone from Japan. She told me that men in Japan NEVER eat sweet things. It's considered very unmanly to eat sweets.

But as with all these things, it's not wrong or bad, just different! I'm sure there are TONS of girls who don't like sweets. I like dark/milk chocolate but I don't like super sugary sweets like skittles, and I can't stand fudge.

It depends what I feel like at the time, but I much prefer salty fried foods and savoury dishes than desserts.

You're not alone. I love salty/crunchy and my boyfriend likes the sweet stuff. I could polish of bags and bags of chips, pretzels, crackers..pretty well any deep fried crunchy thing. This has been the hardest thing for me.

On the odd occasion when I will have some chocolate or something sweet it needs to be really GOOD quality - not the cheap dime store junk. I'm talking super dark, hand made chocolate from a real chocolate shop.

I don't have any eating habit that I consider embarrassing..I eat what I eat that's the way it is ;)
