Why does it take sooo long to lose weight?

I guess I always looks for instant results. I've lost 4 lbs in 5 weeks. I get a little frustrated though, because I am ALWAYS under my calorie requirement, sometimes by 200-300 calories. Seems so easy to gain and so hard to lose.

It's a good thing to lose weight slowly. The slower you lose it, the more likely it will stay off. Patience REALLY pays off with weight loss.0

I guess there are some things to consider (and I am a novice at this) but muscle cells are heavier than fat cells - so if you're working out you might be getting thinner - but not losing as much weight as you thought. I think that is why it is important to see waist and hip measurements over time as they will change to show you that things are moving in the right direction.
Another thing that people say is that if you reduce your intake too much, your body can go into starvation mode and start conserving body fat - so you stop losing weight there too.
It can be tricky sometimes but keep at it and your'e sure to succeed.
Good luck, Peter0 -

What's the rush?
Open your diary if you want some better feedback.0 -

And the better chance you'll have that your skin bounces back too lol0 -

Like the saying goes
"Nothing worth having comes easy"
That's why gaining is easy but losing is worth having. Keep doing what you do you're getting there!0 -
Guess I'm just an impatient person by nature.
I like the idea of tracking the measurements. I do tend to get too hung up on the scale, all though I try not to.0 -
What McBully said. If you're too far under cal for too long your body will go into a holding pattern. Open your diary, let us see & we can help better :flowerforyou:0

under what calorie amount...may we see your food diary?0

You didn't gain all of the weight in 5 weeks... it's not going to come off in 5 weeks either. Slow and steady, and soon enough you'll be looking back wondering where it all went!0

4lbs in 5 weeks is actually not bad!
You didn't put the weight on overnight, so you can't expect to lose it that quickly either. I totally understand your frustration though. I've lost a significant amount and now my scale never seems to change and just fluctuates up and down. I am doing loads of exercise and eating right, so I started tracking my measurements. In the past month I have only lost around 2kg (about 4lbs) BUT I have shrunk my body by 10cm!!
It's not all about the scale love start finding other ways to track your progress and you may find that the results are different than you think.0 -

This is great advice, thanks for understanding! I make it a point to never go under 1200, so I don't think "starvation mode" is an issue. I have done this in the past, not knowing any better, but now I do!!!0 -

That's great you make it a point to not go under, also WHAT you eat & WHEN makes a HUGE difference. if you eat processed foods you may be sabotaging your lifestyle change (anything not made from fresh raw ingredients at home is processed, even those ready to eat salads at grocery stores). Open your diary & there may be a few tweaks that will give you the real answers you want.0 -
because you didn't gain the weight overnight either, I know it can be frustrating but we all didn't get the point of needing to lose weight overnight, just like we all won't be at our goal overnight either.0

I agree totally with this. I've dieted while eating processed foods, and I've dieted "clean" and boy have my results been different!0 -
Be patient, it took a long time for the weight to come on, it will take work to get it off (and don't forget muscle weighs more!)0
-
You want to keep it off right? If not, try hcg or something.
Also take measurements, inches are what matters.0 -
I focus on measurements more than weight, and I find that more motivating. I do weigh myself, but i'd rather lose a few inches off my hips than a few lbs, because that inch loss will make my old jeans fit better!
I've lost nearly 50lbs in 15 months, which I don't think of as a lot in that time, but i've lost 10 inches off my waist, 10 off my hips and around 10 off each thigh, plus some (not sure how many) off my arms, and off my chest.
I've also found that upping my calories to around 1400 has helped me lose weight, rather than keeping to 1200. MFP and my personal trainer suggest 1500, but I am scared to go up to that sometimes, which is silly!0
