What's that muscle?

What's that muscle called that lies along the back of the humerus (the bingo wings muscle)? Not the triceps group but the pulling one that is engaged when doing pullups or deadlifting?

The one that hurts after doing negative pullups! It seems to be the weakest link in the chain as my biceps and lats can do far more work in pullups if it were not for this muscle which is weaker and really sore after pulling up.

I am two stone overweight - that doesn't help!

Are you talking about the latissimus aka lats.

I don't think this is the Latissimus dorsi which I think is the muscle which sweeps down the back. It connects between just under the armpit and just above the elbow and is a pulling muscle.

If you strike the classic double bicep contraction pose it would be the one opposite the bicep.

If I knew how to post a picture into a posting, I could show you.

    Want some stronger lats?

Rows - Yates, Kroc, Bent over, Pendlay, T-bar, etc
Pull ups - Negatives, Wide Grip, Type Writers, Muscle ups, etc
Deadlifts - Snatch Grip, Deficit Pulls, etc
Olympic Lifts - Snatch, Power Snatch, Heavy High Pills, Snatch Balance, Snatch Grip Military Press

With out getting into hair splitting your humerus is surrounded by two muscles, bicep and triceps. Bi is a pulling muscle, Tri is a pusher.

You should try some yoga to help you improve your pull-up strength

Not triceps - they are pushing muscles, not pulling.

I am thinking Brachialis it sits the opposite side of the Humerus and both are involved in pulling movements.

I make it the Intercosto brachial (T2) see link:

What I do know is it is real sore after pullups - not so much after Chins as the Bicep helps more in those.

DavPul - we both know Yoga does very little to improve pullup strength - even in the squat rack!

Well, whatever muscle it is, just keep doing the negatives and it will get stronger over time. I think this is the best method for getting good at pull ups when you can't do them. As you lose weight you'll find that they're easier as well. This is a pure strength to weight ratio exercise. That's why skinny kids can crank these things out.

    Don't give up.

Is the lat all the way from the lumbar region all the way up through the armpit to along the back of each arm then?

Bingo wings - its the bit where if you turn your right arm palm up straight out and bring your left arm across your front palm up - its the bit you cup in your left hand. The triceps will be out to the outer side and the muscle I am talking about will be in your left palm.

Do a few pullups and then feel the back of your upper arms - that one!

Thanks everyone - great advice iWaffle, I'll keep working on it and yes, its high strength to weight ratio I am working towards. Did I mention I do Yoga?

Definitely in the mood for Waffles now but only 500 calories to go and that won't help my pullups!

The tricep is composed of 3 muscles that take up pretty much the entire underside of your arm. It isn't just the outer side of your arm. It probably accounts for 2/3 of your arm size. I'm guessing that you're talking about that.

    My guess is: TRAPEZIUS

I know what you mean, but are the triceps not only pushing muscles? The muscle I am talking about is contracting only when I pull up (not when I do bicpe curls though). It runs along the underside of the upper arm.

nope - trapezius runs across the yoke of the shoulders. The muscle I mean runs along the underside of the upper arm and is a pulling muscle.

edit: (just had a thought) when you do Preacher Curls, it is the muscle at the back of your upper arm that rests on the preacher pad. Any good?

edit2: I've just posted a photo showing the muscle I mean if it helps and I've opened my profile to Public.

That is a tricep. I've heard of bicep push-ups (which didn't make since to me).
