so it looks like my body is finally bored and on a plateau phase...the thing that totally sucks though is that my I am consistently under my BMR and yet I just cant seem to shift my weight at all now. i mean i am huge, im 400lbs surely i should be losing weight ever so easily still. my BMR is very high but my intake is mediocre im consistently under my calorie goals or bang on my target. the only thing i can think of is that being a vegetarian my carb intake is perhaps hindering me...but i seriously struggle to eat if i dont have them. any ideas, or help?
also i use the scales at the gym to weigh myself, although the weight part is ok, the BMI and body fat etc is really inaccurate as my height for some reason varies between 5ft11 & 6ft1 according to the machine. does anyone know if a decent body composition scale that will give me pretty accurate readings of body fat, water weight, muscle weight, etc etc possibly one that gives impedance as well?
Thanks in advance for any help guys, im still hoping i lose enough weight to go on holiday in march and not ask for a seatbelt extender on the plane!!

I guess your BMR isn't half as high as you think it is.0

Maybe you should see a doctor to make sure you don't have any thyroid or medical problem hindering your loss.0

Water, water, water! Drink lots and lots of water. For your size, [now don't get all excited folks...8 cups isn't for everyone] you might consider 4 to 7 litres of water a day... [folks, you will NOT drown, unless you are silly enough to try and drink it all at once]. I'm around 245 and I drink 4-5 litres a day. Yes, I'm always in the bathroom, but when I plateau, a couple days of even more water and I'm losing again.
Drinking water helps flush fat and toxins from the body. If you don't drink enough, the liver and kidneys get backed up with crap and find it hard to do their job. Kind of like trying to flush a large pile of TP with a low-flush toilet. It doesn't work well.
From Wikipedia: "the total amount of water in a man of average weight (70 kilograms) is approximately 40 litres, averaging 57 percent of his total body weight. In a newborn infant, this may be as high as 75 percent of the body weight, but it progressively decreases from birth to old age, most of the decrease occurring during the first 10 years of life. Also, obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body, sometimes to as low as 45 percent"***.[1][2] These figures are statistical averages, so are illustrative, and like all biostatistics, will vary with things like type of population, age and number of people sampled, and methodology. So there is not, and cannot be, a figure that is exactly the same for all people, for this or any other physiological measure. For example, Jackson's (1985) Anatomy & Physiology for Nurses gives a figure of 60% for the proportion of body-weight attributable to water, which approximates Guyton's 57%."
***your % of water may be lower, but your need for it is higher when you are losing weight...you are flushing more fat and toxins than someone losing, e.g. 10 pounds.
Also...if you are working out, you may be gaining muscle, while losing fat...they tend to balance each other out when you first start working out, but eventually you'll start losing more fat than gaining muscle. Hang in there!
Good luck!

I am certainly no expert, but I would suggest that you see your doctor and ask him / her to help you lay out a realistic and healthy plan for your weight-loss. They can help determine your BMR and Body Fat, etc. and then help you find a diet and exercise program that works for you as an individual. After all, we're all so very different.
BMI is crap because it is so black and white. It uses only height and weight, and doesn't account for muscle mass. I once worked with a man that was a (very fit & muscular) former NFL football player. According to his BMI, he was considered "obese". He had to fight the (life) insurance company to cover him. Looking at him, I would swear there wasn't an ounce of fat on him. So, it's popular, but not always an accurate evaluation of the condition of your body.
Although everyone here tries to be helpful (and often have some great suggestions & are very supportive), it is impossible for any of us to accurately diagnose what's going on with someone else. If the gym scale is inaccurate, then I'd invest in a decent quality scale for home and just use that.
Best of luck to you, and don't be discouraged. You will get there, you just might need to re-direct your path a little.0 -

Dieters edema is when the fat cells start to absorb water. Water has almost exactly the same weight as fat per volume. So if you have dieters edema you will literally replace your fat with water and you can't tell the difference from appearance or scale.
There is very little truth to the metabolism slowing down.
The way to offset the dieters edema is to eat at maintenance, or do a complete 24hr fast. You can fast 3 days a week, on other days you eat at maintenance.
I do a less extreme approach, I eat 30% of my calories 1 day, the other day i eat at maintenance. This is the best technique I have come of across.

thanks for all the replies folks, i have been checked out by doctors around the world (literally) and i have had countless tests done. physically they have all come back fine. i know calculating BMR isn't always accurate so i have taken the lowest figures i have found. as for the water i drink around 4 litres a day easily. im revamping my training plan this weekend and changing up to do some short intense cardio and increase my resistance training.
thanks again for the replies definitely given me some food for thought...oh yeah and i dont do giving up so i wont be quitting!0 -

Yeah that's why people supposedly stall out on very low calorie diets. Yet scientific research doesn't show that much of a metabolic decline.
Have you done scientific research on the subject?
No but I'm a qualified Doctor so know a LOT about physiology.0
