Dessert for the homeless/Help me choose

I volunteer at a church to help feed the homeless. Tomorrow I am supposed to bring the dessert. I wanted to bring something other than the usual cakes, cookies, brownies, pies, or ice cream. I need help in deciding what to make. Which do you prefer? Vanilla yogurt parfaits with berries and granola or sliced apples drizzled with carmel, maybe some chocolate and then sprinkled with crushed peanuts?

The apples with carmel sounds really awesome :)

BTW I think its so awesome that you volunteer... love it!
  • Aww that is a great thing to do. I think they would be happy with either one of them and appreciate that it is something a little different. I don't think you could make a wrong choice :)

first thing I thought of was apple pie. Just seems like no matter who you are or where you come from, you had an apple pie at some good point in your life.:) What a great thing you are doing. :)

I agree with this suggestion. Also apple pie is more filling. As nice as fancy food is, if you've not eaten properly for a few days, you want something that's nice and filling. Apple pie and custard would be really good.

Sliced apples drizzled with caramel also sounds filling. Maybe sprinkle berries on top, for more micronutrients (also very important if you don't usually eat well)

Apples with caramel sounds the the more unique idea.

I think it's great that you're volunteering and putting a lot of thought into it. :)

homemade pie (apple or pumpkin) + 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream

they will love you for this. it's not about impressing the other volunteers, it's about giving these folks something filling and delicious, right?

Thank you everybody for all your input! I forgot to mention that we will also be serving donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate when everybody arrives. Then while they are showering and getting shoes, clothing, and recieving other donated items, and while the pastor says a few words, the other volunteers and I will prepare lunch. It is going to be kind of a heavy meal so I was going to go a little lighter on the dessert. Apple pie a la mode is a wonderful idea and I think I will volunteer to provide that on a day when lunch is not as heavy. I think I will go with the carmel apple slices this time around. Once again, thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it :-)

You're right, it's not about impressing the other volunteers. Most people that I have come across that volunteer for this kind of work are very selfless, compassionate, and kind. They don't care about trying to impress peers/coworkers. They just wish they could do more for people who are not as fortunate as the rest of us.
