Day 4 for me with MFP, and I just increased my columns on my food diary chart. One of my worries right now is that my ankles have been swelling, and that never used to happen....so I am trying to track how much sodium I am taking in. I am trying not to use a salt shaker at all...Who knew that a poached egg had 147mg of sodium, whole wheat bread has 148mg, and tuna has 170 mg for half a can?? I have 90lbs to lose, and I'm tired of my body aching like I'm a 90 year old

its crazy how much sodium is actually in foods!! At my weight loss meeting last night we learned that the fda recommends no more than 1500 mg of sodium for people over 50 and anyone with chronic health problems..its disgusting to think about it!!! I NEVER use salt in my cooking and I barely use it otherwise...good luck with cutting back! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water as it flushes the extra sodium and will reduce the swelling.
  • 1500mg of sodium for over 50!! My chart shows 2500 as my allowable daily goal!

The good news is I am staying around 1500 today. Yesterday it was a busy day, and I just made hamburger helper....yikes....I won't do that again for a while.
I almost have 3 bottles of water down today, plus my coffee this morning makes 7 cups so far today.

Thanks for the encouragement..... How are you doing? Can we be MFP friends?

There is a lot of sodium in any processed food because it's a preservative. aside from that are you or do you suspect type II diabetes? It was a symptom I started having shortly after I was diagnosed. Incidentally, that is no longer an issue, I cut (Processed) carbs and reduced my fat intake and within four months I was free and clear, they type II had reversed itself. NOW I might notice swelling if I indulge in too many salted almonds  :ohwell:

It's shocking how much sodium is in foods. The one that caught me off guard the most was when I made homemade chicken noodle soup. Apparently those soup broths are brutal. Cooking everything yourself is definitely the best option in keeping the sodium down as much as possible.

Good luck on your journey and welcome to MFP!

Suggashie, Have you tried agave or other low glycemic index natural sweeteners? They still have quite a few calories, but are significantly sweeter than sugar by amount.

I used to drink my sugar and cream with a little bit of coffee, so I feel your pain. Tea, too..southern style. I've cut back significantly and it was hard. And it still doesn't taste as good, doesn't feel the same. The coffee, i started using a coffeemate creamer since it sweetens it up a bit, too. Tea, I started drinking earl gray because I actually enjoy the flavor so I don't feel the need to cover or sweeten it as much.

    Alliss,
Eating out is generally a big no no too if you're watching your sodium. I'm 28 and relatively in good health and have never had sodium issues or swelling. I ate at Red Lobster a few years back and my hands ached for 3 days, could barely bend my fingers...I looked up the nutrition facts of the dish I had finished over the course of 3 or 4 meals (Some kind of crab fettuccine) and it had upwards of 3000 mgs in it! Ridiculous! It' should be illegal to give people stuff like that.

Sodium is definitely one of those things that lurks in just about everything, even though we sometimes forget about it. Welcome to MFP, feel free to add me if you would like. :-) Best of luck to you!
  • Thanks Colleen for the information. I had my blood work done last year, and my sugar and cholesterol levels were good! Since then though, alot has happened.....and I've put on another 20lbs this year. We don't do "take-out" hardly ever....maybe once a month we get a pizza or go out for a fish and chip dinner. I try to cook everything at home, from scratch, but I'm really starting to realize how much sodium is in everything...so hamburger helper is not going to be an option anymore.. My portion control is also something to get a grip on. If it is the beginning of type 2 diabetes, I want to nip it in the bud NOW! Thanks for caring.

Hamburger Helper used to be a staple in my house. I have not made it once in the past 10 months and I have to say, I don't miss it at all.

it's what we're here for. you had mentioned aching which isn't typically something that accompanies sodium swelling unless it's sever and then more a feeling of tight skin. The aching though, yeah, I had a lot of that then too, maybe even before I was diagnosed. At any rate, I have switched to 1 equal in my coffee (gradual step down from the original two when I started this journey in May) with skim milk (you really don't notice it and cutting other dairy for two weeks makes switching to skim all together VERY easy). I eat very little sugary treats, Halloween omitted from my memory - of course  , I don't eat sandwiches, I eat wraps on low carb pitas or even just use leaf lettuce at the wrap... When I do indulge in those things (parites with ice cream, cake, and party snacks totalling 6 bazillion calories in one microsized bite) it is RARE and controlled. I eat before going to a party or gathering. I ALWAYS buy a 1 ltr bottle of Evian on the way to the gathering to deter possible excessive alcohol or soda intake, and I steer awy from snack tables as much as possible.

I am a Chocoholic in a serious way. Halloween is an evil day for us. First year on the jopurney and I failed that test. The difference is, I got right back on the wagon. We all mess up, it's getting up and dusting off that matters most.

Welcome to MFP! Sodium was a big eye opener for me too! I had no idea how much sodium was in the foods I ate until I started tracking it on here. Restaurants really pack it in their foods. I rarely add salt to anything now,It which is something I would never have thought I could cut down on. I try to stay away from boxed (processed) foods as well. I haven't had hamburger helper in almost a year and do not miss it! Feel free to add me as a friend if you like. =)

I just sent you a friend request, we have a lot in common. Not just our age and similar weight goals but my daughter is getting married next fall and I would love to make my goal by then!

I have swelling in my ankles from time to time and my Dr can't figure out why, I noticed it has lessened as I eat better and exercise.

re: Hamburger helper. You could always make it at home. No msg, you can limit the salt and cheese portions. We do it all the time, and I think it's better....as are most things made at home. lol
