Suggestions for free ipod apps for walking challenges

Has anyone got any suggestions for some apps I can download from the App store for apps that encourage walking/running challenges? Ideally I'd like to start out with walking and as I build up my fitness go into running. I would prefer free apps for now as at this point in time I'm not financially in a position where I have the money to pay for apps. (I'm on quite a tight budget due to a few medical expenses at the moment) Thanks for your help :)

I use walkmeter...you can use it for anything from walking, jogging, biking, etc. It tracks calories, miles, elevation, just about anything you could want and it's free.
  • Thanks Rompers! I'll check it out :)
  • I never paid for any of my applications, I use free applications only.

Not really familiar with the walking applications (but I searched "pedometer" and there are plenty of them for free), and for running the best application is Nike + Running.
Simple, easy to use, it uses GPS to count the distance and track you on the map, and also gives you voice feedback on both speed and distance as well as the calories you burn.

    Mapmywalk works great for me
  • DEFFFFF get lolo's treadmill beat burn. It does cost but sometimes you can get it on sale for $2.99 but its regularly $4.99 but it such a amazing app.. You can use it on a treadmill or outside walking/running or both. You can listen to their music or you can chose music from your music gallery and listen to it. It will tell you to walk this fast for so many seconds/minutes, and then after that it will tell you to switch the intensity either up or down. You have the option of choosing how long you want your walk to and everything.
It's an amazing app and so worth the money, trust me.
  • Thanks all for your great suggestions! Before seeing all your responses I managed to come across a couple of apps (including the C25K program) that I will try and hopefully I can modify as a walking app first then get into the running, but I will definitely look into your suggestions as i want to make sure I have found the right app :)

Couch to 5k is great. I had ease into 5k which maps your activity and gives you average pace for both walking, running and the whole activity.
    Runkeeper is good to.
