Sugar intake?

I'm a huge sweets lover, so I decided to monitor my sugar intake on my Food Diary to be sure that I was staying under the recommended amount of sugar. However, even if I don't eat any "sweets" I go over my intake. For example, today I had a vanilla-berry protein shake which consists of:

1 c. Frozen Strawberries
1 Medium Sized Banana
1 tsp. of Vanilla Extract
1 Scoop of Whey and Soy Protein Powder
1 c. 1% milk

and I am already over my sugar intake. Does anyone else who monitors their sugar have this problem?

I did monitor my sugar intake for awhile and was frustrated that fruit and fruit juice (minimal) put me over my sugar level for the day. I did learn that raspberries have the least sugar of berries. Other members suggested that I don't worry about sugar from fruit, only added sugar in other foods. Hope this helps.

Unless you have a medical condition, I wouldn't worry as much about the sugar intake from fruits or other natural sources. Worry more about the refined sugars and white grains.

I'm always waaaay over my sugar intake .. and it comes from food/berries, etc. Yes .. I admit -- I add sugar to my coffee/tea, but I cut out my favorite soda .. *snif* . Unless you're sugar is over by hundreds .. 500 or more than the recommended daily allowance, I don't think you have to worry .. I'm usually over between 26-60 or so a day .. fluctuates depending on what I ate .. and most of it is from food .. not refined sugars.

Flavored yogurts will push you over your sugar allowance.. but I'm not eating 15 yogurts a day either .. usually just one during breakfast or lunch .. and possibly as a snack .. I just don't see eating a flavored (greek) yogurt is gonna kill me with sugar or pack on the pounds. LOL :drinker:

I'm usually 20 to 30 grams over, depending on what I ate. If I drink milk, eat a fiber bar, and have some fruit, it already goes over. Then I feel bad when I want a treat, like dark chocolate, because then it really goes over. Of course it went over more than usual due to Halloween candy, but it's just discouraging to see that it is over all the time even when I don't eat any sweets.

Yes, I do go over on here. I don't go by the recommended amount on MFP. I was in a nutrition program lead by a Registered Dietician/Nutritionist and she said no more than 32 grams per day of "added" sugar. Therefore, naturally occuring sugars (as in fruits) wouldn't count. Things like Craisins (which I was eating constantly) were 26 grams per serving. Yikes! I was considered borderline Diabetic and was able to bring my blood sugar to normal levels by doing "added" sugar only.

MFP sugar levels are too low... and their protein levels are too low too.

Another option would be to not track your sugar intake .. switch your diary settings to track something else instead.. or just drop the sugar all together. If mentally it bothers you that you go over your sugar even while eating natural foods.. it may be best to not look at it. Psychologically it'll just mess with you.

As long as you keep your refined sugar intake in check .. i.e. in coffee, teas.. sodas and of course sweet treats .. then I wouln't worry too much if you're staying under your calories.

Sodas are empty calories of sugars .. so if you're feeling hungry, then cut out the soda and swap it for some food instead. :-)

I use to go over my sugar really bad too, but I have learned to eat foods that are not high in sugar. I know everyone says if you get the sugar from fruit it doesn't matter, but I think it does..(for me anyway) You just need to learn how much sugar is in what ever you are going to eat. Maybe plan out what your going to eat before you eat or make it
