Focus on hosework...Or focus on losing weight?

I feel like I need to make a choice on weather I should stay commited to cleaning and organizing my house...or to stay commited to trying to lose weight????
3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 3 level house. Crap everywhere. Not one spot is designated for anything...Just random things thrown in random places. I would do a total clean...then it just gets messed up again. 6 person family...4 small kids and 2 adults...you would think it would stay tidy.NoPe!
But because my 4 yr old daughter is visiting Grandma for 2 weeks...my 7 and 5 yr old are in school...and its just me and the baby...I figured I would go crazy with cleaning, decluttering and organizing. Hubby is at work all day so he cant tell me what I can and cant throw out! He got the "hoarder" trait from his mom and grama...me on the other hand...am the complete opposite.
I figured..Im the only one that cleans...so Im going to clean the way I want to!
But I also really want to lose weight. I feel like if Im trying to do many things at once, Ill fail.I know that once my house is taken care of, I wont be in such a slump all the time and I wont have anything to clean all day so Ill exercise more often.
Should I focus on my house for a little bit ? Or maybe try to exercise while Im cleaning? Alot of what I need to do consists of sitting down and going throw things...
Now I dont even know if Im asking a question....or just venting :S

Maybe turn up the music and dance while cleaning? Or stand while you're organizing versus sitting? I would imagine keeping a house tidy with that many children is hard work!!
I understand what you mean though. I having trouble focusing as well when my house is messy.0 -
Um, have you ever thought about combining the 2? Get some ankle weights and clean that house! Going up and down the stairs all day is a great workout! If I had a 3 story house(hell in SF if there were 3 story houses I'd be shocked!) I'd be running stairs all day!0

Clean house first. Cleaning the house will burn off calories as well.0

Cleaning IS exercise - especially if you are talking about a whole re-org. You can lose weight by putting a focus on your diet while you clean your house. Is there some reason you think you won't lose weight if you chose to clean your house instead? It's not a one or the other thing, you can do both!0

I don't know why they have to be mutually exclusive. Cleaning and be a pretty intense form of exercise, and it usually distracts me from eating. I completely forgot about lunch yesterday, I was so caught up in cleaning my house.0

Ankle weights! Good idea! I am up and down the stairs alot!0 -
I know how you feel, but you can always think of housework as a light form of exercise.
FWIW When I get really busy, I find my crockpot is my best friend.0 -

Exactly...When Im cleaning I have to keep at it. Once I stop to eat for instance....its all over unil I get a burst of energy again.0 -
Clean the house and get it done while you have the time. You'll feel so much better about being there. Cleaning is also good aerobic activity, your standing and moving constantly. I do a super clean everything couple weeks but daily i do just a little cleaning. when you keep up the cleaning it never gets too bad and doesn't have a chance to pile up. That way when the cleaning is done, You can work out while the baby naps and then maybe have time to go for a walk after she wakes up! Goodluck! i deal with this same issue everyday with the kids and house work. Make a routine and up keep and you will feel better about it all0

I feel like if I over whelm my brain with trying so hard to do something...Ill fail in the end and be very disapointed with my self.
I know cleaning is great exercise...But for the first few days to a week itll pretty much be just sitting down and going throw things. Garbage, keep...give away ect.
Then after thats all taken care of itll be scrubbing, scrubbing and more scrubbing.0 -
I know how you feel. It is so hard to balance life's demands and feel like you're giving 100% in all that you do. I agree with erinh87, crank up the music and turn cleaning your house into a workout! You could also designate certain days for house chores, and certain days for exercise! Just remember that you can do it! You may not see changes as quickly as you'd like, but you know what they say... "slow and steady wins the race.".0

Like others have said, combine the two. But besides that you also need to figure out a way to keep the house in an order you can live with, and the other 5 people as well. I'm not sure how old the kids are, but 3 and up should be quite able to keep their room in order. Get them to do it directly after dinner every day while you or the hubby washes up.
Really, if you feel there's no other things you can handle in your life because the house is a mess you need to find a solution for it that lasts longer than 3 days.0 -
why do you think that cleaning your house means yo uarent commeitted ot losing weight?
there will be plenty of times in life where things come up and you dont get your workout in or you eat cake... this should be a lifestyle change that is a continuous journey, not a diet that you stop and start...
stick to your calories and you will lose weight!0 -
PUt some hand and ankle weights on, and let the house cleaning be toning as well. Keep your diet clean while your at it and you can do both at the same time. You got this. I need to clean house as well.0

Weight loss is far more about what you eat than what you do. You'll never out exercise a bad diet so do whatever you need to do and watch your calories. On the ankle weights idea, they aren't meant to be worn while walking around. It can really mess up your knees and hips to have them on for anything other than static weight lifting.0

Exactly!
Not being able to lose weight because you have to clean your houae is quite an excuse.0 -

I do that while I clean! Mrs Doubtfire style xD0 -
Thanks guys! All the replies are great Im sure If I dont keep my body in one spot all the time I will be able to do it.
I should do one floor a day. Instead of trying to tackle the whole house at the same time. If I do that itll stress me out and Ill give up.
As long as Im moving...I got this!0 -
Doing a major house clean is pretty hard work. My house sounds a similar size to yours and when I do a full deep clean I'm at it all day and i'm shattered by the end of it!! Concentrate on your diet closely, watch your cal intake and get cleaning! You'll burn loads of cals!0

What about compartmentalizing the chore. Do one room at a time. Tell yourself one room a week. Touch everything in that room once and make a decision, move to another room, donate, toss, or clean and keep. I do this about every 2-4 years in my house. It feels amazing. I go through every drawer, clean the walls, purge massively, fix loose knobs, oil wood, you know, the stuff that doesn't get done on normal weekly cleans (at least not around here) life is too short to worry about the nooks and crannies all the time.
One you get your house in order, you will feel lighter and more free to focus on yourself. And what every else said, you will burn calories.0 -

I make a lot of excuses as an excuse for being lazy lol...
One of my biggest excuses is sciatica and PFS (patello femur syndrom) which is a bunch of stuff swelling up behind my knee caps...Which makes bending at my knees very painful, and stand or sitting for long periods of times painful as well.0 -
weighted vest.. but even without.. i dont count it, but i burn 150 calories per hour just doing the standard "clean" every day here.
I have cats & dogs.. so i have to clean daily, not just pick up... im talking dusting, vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, wiping counters, pretty much scrubbing the entire house every single day..
WHY? because i chose to have kids and animals?
Why? because i love my kids, my animals and my life and i dont choose to allow it to get to a place that upsets and bothers me with clutter and mess.
Pick one room a day and dont stop until its done. At the start of every day, go back into that room and straighten it... shouldnt take more than 10 minutes.. and then start the other room until its DONE.
By the end of two weeks, you will have a mega burn, and it will only take you about 1-2 hours a day to top to bottom your house.
I top to bottom mine daily, and its the best feeling in the world!!!
I also wash all the blankets and sheets on the bed once a week as well as the shower curtains... and clean the bathrooms daily, but im kind of OCD about it... LOL!0 -

I have 2 cats as well. Keeping up with the litter box is also my job. Because Of how much the shed I have to vacuum and sweep very often! Its pretty much the only thing I keep up with consistently0 -
Do you have a calorie counter? I wore mine a few times while cleaning for 3 hours straight and burned 800 calories! I told myself that was worth the workout. Definitely a little bit of both though. I feel you balancing school , homework, family life, and work is hard.0
-
Ive got the same thing going on here but not all the childeren and not that big of a place, cleaning does burn calories but if you have to sit and go thru things i would suggest sitting on a stability ball or stand ....good luck!0
-
why can't you do both? I take it one room at a time with cleaning and organizing. That in itself is a great work out.0

I went to buy one the other day but couldnt afford $150! So I settled with buying a pedometer for now.0 -

We lose weight by staying in calorie deficit. Has nothing to do with cleaning the house. If you're thinking you won't have time to exercise and therefor will not be able to lose weight you are misinformed. Stay within your calorie goal and you will lose weight.0
