I get that water retention is when the body's cells hold more water, but which cells, specifically, do that and why? I know high sugar load and hormone changes both cause water retention, but do they operate through the same mechanism, and is the water stored in the same place(s)?

Water retention is typically due to high amounts of sodium. The body retains water when we eat a lot of sodium in order to maintain the correct ratio in your blood.0
