Im new to MFP; been on for a week now. Is it just me or is finding out how much fat REALLY is in each meal just eye opening!?

    I know how you feel!
When I began logging my food the calories are what shocked me! I shouldn't have been surprised since that's what caused my weight gain, but still..

I think that eye opener is a good thing though. Better to be informed in order to make the best decisions.

On the contrary. Or rather, depends what you usually eat. Finding out how many calories were in each meal and what I was deeming "a serving" of things like rice and pasta when measuring by eye versus a sensible serving when measured by a scale was eye opening. Personally I struggle greatly to eat enough fat, I'll quite often pre-plan, realise I've only got 20g of fat in my meals for the day and just start throwing pesto on things to get the number up.

Oh I agree; its good to see EXACTLY what Im eating. Now when I see food I wonder how much is really in it; its given me a new better outlook to choosing what to eat

Always surprised by the amount of sodium in foods, especially the ones marketed as healthy, health conscious, diet.

I agree with the poster who talked about servings sizes. That was a HUGE shock to me. What? A HALF lb of pasta isn't one serving? WTF?

I'm always shocked at how shocked people are by fats.

Fats are essential for your health and have more energy than carbohydrates.

Only reason why "low-fat" products are common are because people are gluttons and can't stop eating.

1 gram of fat has 9 calories and 1 gram of carbs has 4

Absolutely eye opening. But it should be, since most of us got to the place where we decided we needed MFP because we maybe knew what we were doing was bad, but probably didn't know how bad. Now I see it everywhere, people who are exercising and don't understand why they aren't losing weight, while I watch them dump a **** ton of butter in their green beans and then serve up what looks like a nine ounce chunk of meat with a pile of noodles. On the surface, it might look like a good meal, but they have no idea what they're about to take in.

I'm not a clean eater and I recently had a string of bad days (my excuse was pretty understandable, though, and I got back on track right away), but once I started using MFP and seeing the calorie contents and macros of the things I was wanting to put in my body, I started making a LOT better choices and eating much more appropriate portions--and I've reaped the benefits!

ETA: since joining MFP, I've also become obsessed with the recipe function. I don't trust ANYTHING; I have to build my own recipes--sure that box of hamburger helper says there are 300 calories per serving when it's prepared, but when I use the dry mix recipe and put in my skim milk and my lean ground beef, it's like 286. I get a whole 14 extra calories! Also, a lot of the time when someone enters the "prepared" nutritional information, they ignore the asterisk that tells them the fat grams and all other nutritional info to follow is for the mix only, not for the prepared, so they're not accurate anyway. I could correct them, but I like I said, I'm obsessed with the recipes. If there are two ingredients (or more) and neither of them is water, it goes in as a recipe!
