Protien shakes before lifting?

I just read this on Livestrong.com, any thoughts? Anyone drink their shakes before working out? It makes sense to me to already have the protein there & ready in your body, instead of rushing home to drink it right after working out. As long as your stomach can handle it of course......

Pre-Weight Training

During a resistance training workout, the forceful contractions of your muscles stimulates muscle protein synthesis and increases your blood circulation. Because whey protein readily absorbs into your body and quickly enters your blood stream, consuming your protein shake just before you exercise makes amino acids available when your muscle protein synthesis is at its highest level, meaning you will receive the most out of muscle gain with this supplementation timing.

If you have eaten some meat within 3-5 hours before training, amino acids will still be getting released into your blood from that.

Assuming you are not training fasted it's not going to make anY difference for the average trainee.

You will already have amino acids in our system from anything you have eaten that contained protein beforehand.

Yes protein synthesis Is stimulated during a workout, but it stays elevated for hours afterwards also so if you have protein before a workout, during a workout or 30 mins later it makes no difference.

^^^ edit - beat me to it

Ok, this is perfect then. Because my workouts always take place first thing in the morning so I haven't eaten anything. I wake up around 6am & do 30-45 mins of fasted cardio at home, then I could drink my shake while my daughter gets ready for school & then head to the gym to do my weight lifting after I drop her off.

I get up at 5:30am, have my protein shake and then start my weight lifting session around 6am. The shake keeps me full until well after the workout.

That's exactly the effect I'm hoping for, so then I can have breakfast later on like 10-10:30am. That way I don't get home from working out & try to have my shake, coffee & breakfast all at the time which leaves me feeling too full & uncomfortable.

If you are on a calorie deficit try taking this during your workout. It isn't heavy like a protien shake, and it is 0 calories. And as long as you are getting enough protien during the day you won't actually have to drink a protien shake.
