What is going on?! SO FRUSTRATED!

So I started counting calories and exercising back in March 2012. I was very successful and lost 53lbs. I started using my fitness pal about 5 months ago and loved it. I have kept my calorie count at 1200 (I might go over every once and while) and I walk/run 4 miles a day plus due weights, abs etc. For the past 2 months I have been battling a plateau where I went to my doctor and they took me off birth control pills and informed me I have edema, so I have to take a water pill daily. Now, two weeks ago I weighed in at 172.5 (that was on a Friday). The Monday after I weighed in at 186! How does that happen. I understand weight fluctuations but really? I have been sick and was put on Prednisone and a Z-pack, could that impact it? I am just so frustrated and want to give up, i only have 30lbs to go but this is so trying! help!!!!

  • I feel for you. I have heard that going on medication has caused a lot of people to gain weight. I hope that it is just temporary and that your body will adjust. Hang in there. Do NOT give up! You have come too far and done too much to quit now.

Your body is adjusting to new meds, so don't think too much on this yet. That said, tell this to your doc. Weight gain might seem like nothing (so to speak), but a change in meds needs to be monitored.

All that said, change things up. Eat a little more and change your exercises. Your body needs a proverbial "smack upside the head," it seems. But still tell your doc what's going on.
  • I hit a plateau and didn't lose any weight for close to 2 months. What fixed it for me (so far) was to make sure my NET calories are around 1200. I guess I wasn't eating enough. I've started eating more and the pounds started coming off again. I do cardio 6 days a week (I take 1 day off) and I do strength training every other day.

So u gained 14 lbs in 4 days? Unless u went on a pizza, chinese food, grease diet, i don't see that being fat. Sounds like its water or you're body fighting something.

prednisone is a steroid with that being said it can increase your hungry. regarding water weight. You can have huge fluctuations with that. I gained 7 pounds in 3 days then gained another 4 pounds five days latter. Now water back down again. Being taken off the BC can help you with weight loss as BC is known for increasing weight. Also monitor your sodium intake and try to take in less that can be helpful.

It's most likely the meds and putting it on that fast is probably water. I would not worry yet, monitor and if it stays that way by your next Dr appt or a few weeks call them and ask. I was on antibiotics and I gained 5 lbs. Then I lost it real quick the week after and then some. But, if you are super worried, I would call the dr and ask. You can even call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist about the drugs. The ones by me are usually super busy, but they do always like to take a "break" and explain the meds to people.

Prednisone is notorious for making people gain weight when on it. If you have also been diagnosed with edema that means you retain water. I am a strong believer in weekly weighins only however if you have been diagnosed with edema then you should weigh yourself daily. This will give you an indication of any possible patterns with your edema. Usually there is a reason behind edema meaning that it is secondary to a main cause, Did your doc mention why he thinks you are retaining the water? Dont give up weigh daily and see if you see any patterns and just keep plugging away. It will come.
