Why is it you exercise one day and the next day everything is fine and then the FOLLOWING day your muscles are really sore ?

I have started using Kinnect X box games in order to exercise at home...I did an hour of 'My Shape Cardio Boxing' two days ago and I can't walk properly today ! All those squats !

I have taken some Ibuprofen and whilst I'm waiting for it to kick in, so I can go for my Saturday run, thought I would ask the good folk of MFP to explain why this happens in very short words, LOL

I'm not sure if taking medication for DOMS is wise especially if you're going to push them again. Any medics care to comment?

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is caused by microscopic tears in the muscle tissue. The pain and discomfort is believed to come from fluid in the torn muscle leaking out, causing swelling and soreness that's essentially a bruise in the muscle.

The easy way to tell DOMS from injury is that most of the time, DOMS is in the middle of the muscle (biceps, quads, glutes) and injuries happen close to a joint (elbow, knee, ankle).

A relatively simple (if uncomfortable) remedy is to repeat the exercise that caused it at a low intensity. It increases blood flow to the area and helps speed up healing.

you get sore due to lactic acid also. If you drink lots of water this will help the muscles heal and flush out the acid.

I did not know this. Thanks for the info!

Yup and it gets better as you get more conditioned. Just keep at it, exercise is great for your body. I'm glad I kept it up for over 30 years. Because of it my quality of life is quite good in my 50's. The doctor recently had me do a DXA scan and it showed that because I've been lifting weights my bone density at almost 52 years old is that of a super athletic 30 year old (according to the DXA technician). Now if that is not scientific proof that weight lifting keeps you younger I don't know what is! My doctor is quite happy with me right now, besides the fact that I've lost 60 lbs and most of my health issues are now gone or under control.

Just keep up the good health. It's worth it and so are you! :)

That's what they thought in the 1980's, but it's been thoroughly disproven since.

Muscle soreness after exercise beats muscle fatigue when you are sick. Keep up the work and it will get better.
