Amazing new weight reduction strategy.

It is 7:45pm on Saturday night. I have been on an eating jag today, but made enough good choices so that I am still within my calories by a hair. But I still feel like eating. I am going to employ a new stragegy in the war on fat. I am simply going to stop eating until tomorrow morning. I know that sounds strange to some, but it falls within the realm of "self-discipline." That is what happens when you deny yourself something that you want in the short term in exchange for a long term goal-- in this case, health and fitness. I hope this works for you too.

I do the opposite...I eat what I want but work out to balance it out. I have found over the years when I deprive myself, I end up [binging...bingeing...neither spelling looks right LOL] and doing more harm in the long run. Like tonight, I had a big breakfast, oysters for dinner, and I want another beer. So I spent 45 minutes on the elliptical. Now I have earned the beer :drinker:

That is another great way to deal with the situation. I didn't mean to imply that there was only one option when one is "out of calories." However, it seems from reading the boards that some people are bound and determined to find ways to "wire around" eating within their calories rather than simply accepting the fact of having used them up and waiting patiently for the next available opportunity to eat within calories. Again, not the ONLY approach, but a good one nonetheless.

I felt this same way today but I went over my calories.:/. Try and try again. I did think " I should have worked out to balance the calories out" I need to exercise every day I think. I dont know I am just trying to figure this whole thing out as I go.

I know you weren't TFT...I was just playing along! I just know that *for me* deprivation does not work. At all. Ask every high school teacher I ever had. And my husband. Tell me I can't... :noway:

^^^This is why I enjoy having an elliptical in the house...I don't use it as often as I should, but it is available when I want it to be! I want to buy a weight set next...

My best technique is to ensure that I have consumed *ALL* the calories I intend to eat by no later than 7:00PM. After that, if I am hungry, I have a large glass of water and wait until morning to eat. Nearly without fail, the glass of water was what my body needed anyway, not food.

But the deprivation after 7 isn't really a weight loss technique, instead it is a acid reflux prevention technique. I have terrible heartburn at bedtime if there is anything in my stomach except water. Also, anything I eat after 7 is usually an extremely poor food choice for me anyway. It is simply easier to remind myself that the food intake system is now closed for the night.

Part of deciding that you are done eating for the day is trusting that you are truly not in pains of hunger. I used the word hunger vs hungry because I have in the past been hungry for chips, cookies, and chocolate. Really, they were desires, cravings or boredom but not actual hunger. I have disassociated hungry from hunger. In deciding to stop eating for the day, I am forcing myself to relearn what true hunger is and listening to my body. Am I hungry? Am I thirsty?

Some days I am more hungry than others. How am I dealing with it? One, is I have a light snack and go for a walk. This strategy works for me because if I go for a walk, I earn more calories. I've got to move more to eat more. After I take that walk, typically, I don't eat back all of my exercise calories because I am not hungry to eat all of them. But I did get to eat more.
Secondly, sometimes you just want smell and flavor in your nose and mouth. I have never liked diet drinks. I don't like the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners. So recently I have discovered flavored seltzer waters. They are really a two for one deal. I get the oral stimulation I am craving and hydrating at the same time without calories or sweeteners.

So I think Scott is on to something. Have strategies on how to deal with your eating.
    1. Decide, I've had enough to eat today. This body can wait until morning for it's next feeding.
    2. Move more to eat more.
    3. Drink more water, you may just be thirsty.
    4. Have low calorie foods or drinks available to satisfy your oral craving, or even just brush your teeth.
