Do I have to use protein drinks to build muscle?

Hey,

I want some advice. I've been exercising continuously for 6 months and I have seen signifcant improvements in muscle mass. I am now moving onto heavier weights, less reps (between 5 - 8 reps a set) workouts. Can you get enough protein in your diet from food or do you have to use protein shakes to get the best results?

I don't really want to have to use the powders. I already get about 150-200g protein a day from food. I'm 6ft 5, 215 pounds and about 18 - 20% body fat atm.

I would personally say that 150g-200g from food is fine for your height and weight; if you really feel compelled, you can throw in a scoop or two of whey on days where your protein intake is closer to that low end just to be on the safe side.
  • Protein drinks are not a must, it's only required if you aren't getting sufficient protein in your diet through the foods you eat.

Of course you can get all protein from foods only. Powders can't give you any benefit than natural foods such as meat. In fact, normal foods are even better cos they have some good vitamins and nutrients what powders usually don't, it's just empty protein most of the time. I rarely use any powders. I use them if I have eaten very much cals and I need low cal protein, lover than normal foods, or if I am full and don't feel like eating another piece of meat for example. Or if I don't have time for whole meal. There really isn't necessity for powders. If you can get all protein from foods only then it's the best way how to do it!

If you are at a good caloric balance and are already getting that 150-200g per day from food, I would say you probably don't need the protein drinks for your muscle building. Would they further help.. maybe a bit.. but definitely not a necessity.

  • As long as you are getting about 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight you should be fine without a protein shake, a protein shake is a supplement for your diet, if you are already getting 150-200 grams from your food you should be fine without it.

No they are not a requirement at all. I have maybe one a week and that is only because it is usually on a very busy day where I need the extra protein without any added stuff to help meet my intake. I am personally burnt out on them and find I can meet my needs with food alone when planned properly.
  • You don't need protein drinks just eat wholesome/clean foods and your body will do the rest.

You don't need it if you eat enough protein. Quote from the video below. "You can sell ANYTHING to bodybuilders!"

protein drinks are to help you get enough protein. if you're getting 200 per day from food, no extra protein needed.
