Did you ever?

have word games to teach you how to spell as a kid? kinda like;

arithmetic= a red indian thought he might eat turkey in church

geography= george eats old gray rats and paints houses yellow

for some reason it was easier for me to remember a sentence than the spelling of the word lol

what are some of the things that made learning easier for you??

I remember something in music about learning the notes EGBDF: "Every Good Boy Does Fine". Also Schoolhouse Rock during Saturday morning cartoons. I can't say the preamble to the Constitution without singing it.
  • I liked the one in Roald Dahl's Matilda:

    "Mrs D Mrs I Mrs F F I, Mrs C Mrs U Mrs L T Y. That spells difficulty!"

    Always remembered that.

Oh, and Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain - the colours of the rainbow :)

I never used it for spelling per say but, I did use it for the music notes. EGDF, "every good boy deserves favor" and FACE. I also remember using PEMDAS otherwise know as "please excuse my dear aunt sally" for the order of operations in equations.

I just want something that helps people remember the difference between 'lose' and 'loose' as those words are COMPLETELY different. Drives me batty.

I did the music ones (FACE and EGBDF) though we said Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. I've grown up with a lot of them (my mom was a remedial reading teacher), but I think my favorite mnemonic is Kings Play Chess On Funny Green Squares as a way to remember the order of biological classification (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species).

If you don't accept the current scientifec classification then you would have to also consider Eris, Ceres and the other dwarf planets as planets. Might be a bit more difficult to work those into the sentence.

    Mine was this:

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.

Don't remember if our class made it up or if it actually came from somewhere, but I still remember it clearly!

Me too!! I like to show off by singing the preamble.

I also remember ROY G BIV. Anyone else remember that one?

Years later in Anatomy and Physiology class I learned a dirty neumonic(SP?) for the cranial nerves.

I actually learned how to spell by a secret code language that my friends and I used. It was called op. You would basically spell out the word outloud using the letters' sounds, and add "op," to the end of every letter that's not a vowel. Example, my name: Sharie, you would say: Sop Hop ay Rop eye eee. Had to know how to spell to speak the language. I can now spell anything fairly quickly, and I attribute it mostly to that, and not so much to my teachers. lol!
