Opinions on The Fifty Shades of Grey?

  • Hated it, worse book I had ever read. The only good I got from Fifty Shades of Grey was a grown appreciation on all the other books I have ever read in my life and the authors of those books.

It makes me want to hurl

There's a tumblr called 50shadesofwhy, and about 55% of it is correcting grammar xD

I don't understand that. They didn't bother to send these books to an editor or proofreader? Maybe they are looking forward to the $$$ from sales of the revised editions.

I made through the first book and into the second....and gave it up. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. I'll stick with my usual James Patterson and other crime / thriller books!

I got halfway through the book, and I just could not read any more of it. It was one of the most terrible books I've ever read. The author had dreadfully poor writing skills, and she would just use the same phrases (ie: my inner goddess) over and over to the point that the whole story was just repetitive. She even forgot to include part of the BDSM contract in the book!

It's a shame that anything to do with sex will always sell. You could have horrible writing skills like E. L. James and make thousands of dollars off of something like this.

I've flipped through it and felt the same way. I wasn't impressed with this "mommy porn". I expected more graphic detail lol. Maybe if I hadn't read some other similar style books, I would have liked it, but it seemed blah campared to others (Switch, the Beauty trilogy)

If BDSM is what you want to really read about pick up Ann Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy. That's well written. And dark.

THIS! I read that trilogy about 12 years ago, and it still tops my fave list!

Exactly! I remember picking it up in a bookstore about 15 years ago and blushing standing there in the aisle. Been around far longer than the 50 Shdes craze.
  • I have no interest in reading it.

Yes, I'm getting plenty, and it's far better than anything I read in that book.

  • I read it and wasn't that impressed. It is an easy read, but nothing what people described it as. At first I was intrigued because it was so "erotic" and I enjoy literotica myself. It is hardly racy and erotic, rather the same repetitive decriptions for the same boring sex acts.

The book is highly unrealistic, as I think he mentions at one point he makes 100k an hour and he's 27/28??

And I can't help but point out his controlling behavior (even aside from the sex stuff), constant fighting and arguing, and the fact the whole three books transpires over about a three month time frame! Pretty lame, but hey, I read it!

    A piece of ****
  • Thank you!! Reading all these reviews I actually feel completely relieved. All this time I thought the Twilight Trilogy was the worst text I ever forced upon my brain for the sake of knowing W T F everyone was going on and on about, but it appears I am wrong. But now I can look myself in the mirror and give a small smile that I have not sacrificed more valuable time and brain memory space to follow as sheep another futile book suggestion.

They are making it a movie - I hear it will be minus most of the perve

I wasn't ever going to read it - I am more sci-fi/fantasy/horror type reader.

I love you. Like really, really, really love you.

There is no plot. The writing is the worst I've ever seen (and I've seen some bad writing over the years). Christian Grey is an abusive, stalking, insecure creep. I listened to the audiobooks on YouTube just so I can say I know what I'm talking about when I talk about how truly awful the books are. He actually yells at, calls her stupid and accuses Ana of trying to trap him when she tells him she's pregnant (FYI, they're married at that point, so I'm not sure what she was trying to trap him into).

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about the books. Even the sex scenes aren't worth it. They made me never want to have sex again. There is not one good thing to say about them and I shake my head in wonder at anyone who enjoyed them. I really don't get it. It makes me sad.
  • Here's basically my opinion of it summed up perfectly into a couple of gifs:

I wish I could publish my bad fanfiction and make tons of money off of it.

I read all 3 books. It was crazy how addicting it was for how poorly written and repetetive it was. At points it got really annoying but for some reason I couldn't put it down!

It's like passing a horrific car accident. You don't want to look because it's horrifying, but some dark part of your psyche won't let you look away.

I've been involved with enough controlling, stalkerish men in my past. I have no interest in reading about them.

The sex with my controlling, stalkerish exes was much much much hotter than what was portrayed in the book. I can't imagine how anyone could read three of them. Or think they want a man like Christian. Yikes.

And, a 21 year old that never had a computer or email and graduated from college?? Was this book written in 1985 or what?

Actually, the book, The Siren by Tiffany Reisz is really well written and much more accurate of the BDSM community. It actually has less of the sex and more of the emotional component in it. Not for the feint of heart!
