Holidays & Food

We are traveling to see family for Thanksgiving, so it's going to be tough! I plan on taking small amts of the 'bad' stuff to quench any cravings and then eat more veggies, turkey, the good stuff.
Also, my in-laws have a giant dog, so I plan on walking him with my son to get some exercise! He may drag me down the street, but then that's weight training for me to hold on!0 -
I didn't get fat by eating too much on Thanksgiving or Christmas....or any other holiday for that matter. I got fat by eating too much every day of the year.
So, one day of slight over indulgence won't hurt.
That said, I plan to get in a workout that day - mostly because I will need the endorphins when dealing with my extended family the rest of the day
Then, at every meal, I'm going to take a little bit of everything I want to eat. If I finish that and still want more of something, I'll have a little more. No big deal.
I know I SHOULD work out on those big days, but it was going to be hard. YOU, my friend, just sealed the deal for me with your endorphins comment. My body, and probably my family, thanks you.0 -
On Tgiving and Christmas day I am going to eat what I want, no moderation, they only happen 2x a year. All other times I will be eating in moderation/more healthfully. I have to live a little every now and then, rich foods are a big part of the joy of those holidays.0

I am a little afraid. I might try to drop a few pounds if I can, so I can eat more. I usually put weight on around the holidays. I hope this year will be different.0

This holiday, due to the finishing of moving and unpacking, I just hope to log everything, good or bad. I will enjoy whatever foods on the main eating days and try to get some walking in.
I saw a commerical about making new Thanksgiving tradition with the Just Dance 4 for Kinect (I think it was JD4). I have Just Dance 3 for Kinect and may whip it out for the holidays. Great way to have fun with family and friends!0 -
I try and drink lots of water, get in extra exercise, watch portions, and then enjoy the things I REALLY want (not bother with the stuff that is only ok). The big downfall for me is alcohol. And rememberr of course that the celebrations are not really about the food, but the people you are with (ok that's cheesy, but true).0

instead of buying food & drink for the complete xmas , xmas eve , christmas day & boxing day
Last year I started buying just food for 1 day of holiday which still still gives plenty leftovers for boxing day dec 26
And for xmas eve it is a bottle of wine and an assortment of finger food appetizers instead of a complete dinner0 -
My gym is holding classes in the morning so I can get my workout in then I will be able to have desert and still stay within my calories.0

Drink Lots of Water before your meals!!!
Holiday mornings be sure to get in a full workout. Get your metabolism working! I try to take a walk outside after the meal. I plan on bring a vegetable dish that I KNOW is not cooked in butter. Be sure half of your plate is veggies! Then your meat and a couple little spoonfuls of other dishes. Bring gum to chew after the meal so you don't over eat dessert. And the last big choice for me is Wine or Dessert!
Good Luck and remember a couple days of high calories isn't going to hurt. Just get right back on track!!!0 -
Under normal circumstances (though I'm not doing it at the moment) I follow the 5:2 diet where you "fast" by eating 500 calories on two separated days in the week and eat more on the days in between. You can choose which days to schedule as fast days, so I'm going to "fast" on days when I can and "feast" on some of the days in between. Alternate day fasting is similar, and so is the up day, down day diet. Any of those will give you days when you can eat a celebration meal.0

I'm just going to watch my portions and eat my food. I'm not going to get stressed out about the calories, etc. I'm going to try to remember to track my food. I'm going to enjoy my family and enjoy their cooking. I'm going to make sure that I drink more water then soda. I know this isn't how I normally eat, what I eat during the holidays, so having this for one to two days isn't going to harm me much. Leftover are the best...!!! I think it can be much harder for people who have food addictions during the holidays. But if you portion your food and not glutton yourself, I think you will be fine. Remember it takes 20-30 minutes for your belly to register that you are full. So maybe drink a glass of water before you eat may help you not to over eat..it's a thought.
Thanksgiving should be easier then Christmas since I'm going over my brothers and only have to bring the dessert, I won't have all those leftovers for days.0 -
I am doing 2 5k's between now and Christmas, so I've been getting in more exercise and will continue to as I focus on those. This will help me stay away from the treats brought into work and other parties. While it is technically "just 2 days" - let's be honest. It's really about 5 weeks of nonstop parties, dinners, happy hours, etc. I have 3 Thanksgiving meals that I have to attend and only one is on Thanksgiving. SO....for all other days, I will not eat potatoes, stuffing, pie, etc. Take the skin off the turkey and fill my plate with veggies. I'll be running one 5k on Thanksgiving morning, and my reward will be a reasonably sized piece of pie. I plan on logging and trying to stay under 2000 cals.
In my opinion, the worst thing I can do is get into the "splurge, it's only twice a year" because it will take me off the focus and zone that I'm in right now. I cannot and will not have a 5 week free for all :-)0 -
i am going to stuff my face with whatever i choose and exercise more for a couple of weeks0

Thanksgiving was in October for me as I am in Canada, so I will speak solely on Christmas.
I am definitely going to continue logging and being conscious of my food choices throughout that time. I will probably not indulge very much during any of the parties or candy-filled festivities leading up to Christmas day - I've been to events and in sticky situations before, why should these be any different?
On Christmas Day though, I probably won't count my calories. It's ONE day... and if I am extra good the week prior, I can afford to indulge on that day. Even "indulging" I am going to make sure I don't get carried away though - i'm not going to be measuring my portions, but I am also not going to go back for seconds or thirds.
This is my plan so far haha.0 -
I purposely scheduled my bulk around the holidays, and my cut after the New Year.0
-
I'll be doing what I've done the last 4 years. Running/working out and eating in moderation.0
-
I'm going to eat whatever I want to on Thanksgiving day and Christmas Day. In between, I'll have things in moderation when I do all of my baking, etc.0
-
I didn't get fat by eating too much on Thanksgiving or Christmas....or any other holiday for that matter. I got fat by eating too much every day of the year.
THIS says alot!0 -
I think the best thing to remember is that each holiday is really only one day.
Thanksgiving is Thursday, not also Wednesday night, Friday and Saturday.
Christmas and Christmas Eve are each one day(not 12).
That helps you not feel deprived, it allows you to celebrate, but also keep control.0 -
I think the best way to deal with it is to not deprive yourself. Have a little of everything BUT don't go back for 2nds and 3rds like last year. Make sure you get in your daily workouts and even add an extra 15 minutes if you can. It's the holidays so treat yourself but don't overdo it0

Thanksgiving I am pretty much going to eat what I want but everything I make I am going to try to make it with low fat or fat free items. I did it last year and nobody could even tell. I did it with the pies as well and they were great! I also work out in the morning and then once again at night before bed. Good Luck everyone and happy holidays!0

Unfortunately we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Spain, (i say that because I hate the fact that we have to wait until December to start decorating home, and I love decorations so much!) but it's one celebration less to worry about in relation to my battle with food XD
I plan to indulge on Christmas Eve and stick to healthy options for New Years Eve, with the exception of the dessert, I'll eat whatever I feel like.
I would usually over indulge in both occassions but I'm too closed to my final goal and I want to start maintenance mode ASAP.
I'd say, just eat whatever you like but avoid binge eating and you'll be just fine. Even if you put on some weight, you have the whole of next year to revert the side efects
Have fun at Thanksgiving party for me and enjoy!0 -
I agree with this 100%. Thanksgiving won't be a big deal for my family but christmas is in terms of food.0
